He's still generally hailed as some kind of a hero and still seen in a positive light in most forms of media. You have to take more of an interest in history to know he was actually an asshole to basically everyone.

FDR couldn't stand and out of bitterness, sought to break the country's legs through his social programs. Besides that, he must have hated the fuck out of someone who was the best runner in the world.

Almost all Presidents are assholes. Jimmy Carter perhaps is an exception, but then that was probably his biggest failing. The fact that they are assholes doesn't meant they can't also be hailed for winning a war or saving the country or creating some treasured program.
