It has nothing to do with his being conservative, or for criticizing Obama, it's that he chose the completely wrong moment to throw out a nutter statement. I don't care what you believe, but firing off a quick and spontaneous political diatribe at a Toys for Tots charity fundraiser is NOT the right forum in which to voice those opinions.

I hate that too, because I always thought he was awesome.

Honestly, what the fuck did he expect? Companies want to hire actors for commercials where THEIR PRODUCT is the focus. Hiring an actor who has a swirl of controversy (of ANY sort!) about them dilutes the message. It's not rocket science, and it's not partizan bickering!

Which is why Martin Sheen gets all those voice-over commercials, right?

There's a difference between being openly part of the center-left mainstream and making nutjob speeches dogwhistling not-so-subtlety to the extreme racist right.

And there's a difference between being Martin Sheen and being one of the replaceable cog schmucks who does "Angry Drill Sergent" and nothing else for an acting living.

So in other words, as long someone leans to the left they are A-0kay in your book. Got it.

You do know that R. Lee Ermey was a real Sergeant and Drill Instructor for the United States Marine Corps, right?

I like how he throws the term "racist" in there with the right, too, even though he's living proof that lib-tards can be just as racist as their counterparts on the right. :oreo:

    (A) What others have said upthread

    (B) Most viewers aren't good enough with voices to recognize a particular actor doing a V/O, and

    (C) A voice behind a product is a whole 'nother animal from an in-your-face celebrity being, well, in your face

Geico should have known what they were getting when they hired him the first place, especially after this particular commercial:

Love the Gunny, but if you're going to be a pitchman for a corporation, you have to watch what you say in public.

Actor/pitchmen/pitchwomen are a dime a dozen and they can be replaced at the drop of a hat. Just ask Gilbert Gottfried. GEICO has so many different campaigns going at once that no one's irreplaceable. If I get one of those gigs, I'm keeping my opinions to myself! Betcha Flo won't be making any hasty pronouncements...

And what evenflow's post shows is the difference between an actor being fired for having a public meltdown and one being snitched on for sending a voicemail.

So who are the heroes in your "news"? :bailey:

He started ranting, without warning, about Obama being a socialist and destroying the country at a Toys for Tots charity, a public event. Calling it a public meltdown is not a stretch.

It's a totally inappropriate forum. There's a time and a place for everything. That wasn't either one.

Nope. It was a wholly inappropriate place to voice that totally unsolicited opinion. If he would have said "You kids should be thankful Obama's making it possible for you to benefit from this charity!" I'd have wondered what kind of crack he was smoking.

His comments were out of line due to the context and setting. Whether I agree with those comments or not has nothing to do with it.
