... beers all day! Recently I've been importing this great Australian tradition to NZ as a sort of personal trial. It's been great - at first I thought beer in the morning might leave me a little queezy, but it's been a rewarding experience with no side effects other than a deeper thirst. I've been drinking craft beers too, London ales and pilseners and other quality drinks, nothing soft or budget, but being NZ these beers are only around four percent alchohol, which is the standard here; not near the 7% our American friends enjoy. Anyway, I'll be experimenting with this thirst-quenching lifestyle for a week or so, until the novelty wears off anyway. Maybe then I'll continue it, aiming for that great Aussie tradition of drinking all day, all week during work.
I blame The Doors: "Well, I woke up this morning, I got myself a beer Well, I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer The future's uncertain, and the end is always near"
It's a throwback to World War II when they had factory workers on double shifts to make-up for the lost man-power. Since people couldn't leave after the regular shift to go hit the local pub, they came up with lower alcohol beers to provide during breaks. They called them shift beers. A lot of draft brewers have begun to realize there is a market for good tasting lower alcohol beers, so breweries that typically focus on 7 to 10 per cent are now also marketing 4 to 5 per cent beers. Some are quite good, and perfect for an afternoon of heavy drinking when you don't want to get drunk.
New Zealand sounds a lot like some of our Bible Belt states. I've heard anything over 3.5% is illegal in places like Oklahoma (waves to the Flows). Fortunately, I live in a patriotic beer drinking state.
It's not done for legal resaons it's just the standard. There are some high-alchohol imported beers, but not many. When I was in California most of the beers I drunk were around 7%, and I'm naturally inclined to sell this as "American beer".
Did he die? I've been so broken up by the Tasvir news,I hadn't noticed Perhaps a pint or 20 in his honor?
