Processing Feedback

    Processing Feedback

    Can't remember the sources for this assembled flow chart of questions, but it goes something like this:

    • Credibility - Is the source qualified to offer legitimate feedback
    • Reasonable - Is the feedback coherent
    • Agreement - Is this something you've heard before
    • Personal - Is the feedback specific to you
    If the answer is no to any of the above questions consider the feedback hollow.

    So, be it praise or criticism, how do you go about assigning value to feedback? It can be hard to recognize unwarranted criticism, and harder still to recognize unwarranted praise. So how do you decide what to take seriously?

    Use feedback as pointers; check if you can recognize what people are praising/criticizing yourself. If you can't, they might still be right, but you can't do anything productive about it anyway. In those cases, just accept the information as data on what they're thinking.

    With regards to credibility, never bother taking feedback from someone known to lie or otherwise act in bad faith. It's simply never worth the effort of determining whether they're acting in good faith this time. That's why, for example, you don't even try to have a meaningful discussion with visionrazer.

    This, plus a track record. If the feedback from this particular source has a history of accuracy, that would also weight its validity.
