I always thought he was the musical heart of the Doors, although he clearly needed the charismatic front man. I'll have to listen to some LA Woman and a few other classics tonight.
He definitely brought a lot to the table in creating a unique Doors "sound" that set them apart - in their short time they made some consistently solid records. Even their non-hits were still very good.
