Oh geez, I must be at Troll Kingdom and you must be posting to StLucifer after MorningPrince pulled the same stunt NotDayton did.
"they"? The only one beating that drum is Fox, because rep is "gone," and the only satisfaction he seems to get from that is repbombing Dayton. Well, him and the other repressed homo Flashy. I honestly don't get why people will complain about a board sucking and then continue to stick around to complain that it sucks. At least Anc was actively handing out suggestions, but just aimless bitching because the place isn't what it was ten years ago? With the exception of Dayton, just about everyone has matured and grown up.
If it's not dying, it's only because Wrodforge is on life support. If Volpone is blaming rep, he's not far from the truth. Look at the decline this place has had since that happened. Of course, for making that statement, I'll be called a repwhiner by the people who whined about rep and got it neutered. We've lost a lot of good posters. There's not much, if any, new blood coming in. Even Uncle Albert has gone back to Big Blue. There's not very much active discussion going on and when there is, it's usually just John Castle arguing with garamet's mindless bitching and dodging. Half of page 1 consists of shitty parody threads. You people ran off everyone that you didn't like and now you've turned on each other.
We got Gul and Aurora back. I know you disagree with most of their politics, but they're not drooling mongoloids in espressing themselves. I dunno, aside form the previous two I mentioned, Chris and UA have been pretty active again recently. In any event, the board has been bleeding members well before the change and membership tapered off considerably after the hate-on for TNZ died down. You forgot the endless derailing to that the piss outta Dayton. People on both sides have left over the years. Rep never should have been fucked with, but at the end of the day the ability to tell off evil clodpoles such as Dayton without consequence is why I continue to stay....and I don't need the "power" of rep pips to continue to do so. But that said, the reason this place doesn't get new members is because there's no real hook to the place. I post to maybe two other boards, so I dunno if our free speech/ Red Room model is any more prevalent online than it was in '01 when TK opened. Perhaps that could be a hook?
By "decline" I mean the once great personalities that dominated this board and made it interesting are gone; dead and buried. This is the 7th most replied to thread on the front page - a page containing a thread that has been inactive for two days. The good news is that there are enough people here to fix this place. The problem is, does anyone want to?
The problem is that there are as many opinions about how to "fix" the place as there are active posters. For every poster who enjoys the give and take of heated discussion, there is at least one more who feels that shouting really loud is the way to win an argument.
The Red Room does not seem serious enough anymore. Too much name calling and flaming. Media Central attracted more interest when everyone hated Star Trek. Hatred attracts people more than fawning love. The editors of the American Spectator and other conservative magazines have always noted that their readership goes up when a Democrat is in office rather than a Republican. And of course it is not an election year.
I dunno....there's that old saying, "The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference." If people didn't care about Trek to some degree, no one would care enough about it to hate what it's become. There is a lot of room in between nothing in post TOS Trek being good enough and "Bermaga/Coto/JJ can do no wrong."
Don't shoot the messenger. Chris has been gone, what, 2-3 years? More? And, as he points out, he is still in the Top 20 post count. If that isn't because of a decline in posting, I'd be interesting to hear what it is. Maybe Tamar has went into Chris' profile and artificially upped his post count?
Chris is #16 and marathon is #17. We haven't seen marathon since shortly after Obama won election in 2008.
