When Lanz announces to the Gen Pop the transfer, I will reassure people that aside from the software upgrade very little is going to change. As such I would like to say that most of the staff will be staying on with just new volunteers joining to help out. In order to not be lying I'd like to get a head count of who plans to stay. Most of y'all have been doing this for a long time, and not everyone is my biggest fan, so it would be completely understandable to want to take a break for a while with new staff coming on to relieve you. As mentioned in the other thread one of the ideas we've had is that down the road to start some kind of informal rotation to keep people from burning out, so just b/c you leave now doesn't mean you won't be asked to come back later! So... yeah. Can I get a headcount of who plans to trudge on and who plans to retire?
I'm happy to stay on but not bothered if I end up rotated out. I do quite like the idea of regular rotations though, I think I've brought up the idea of doing that here in the past.
If you haven't looked at it yet, one thing I would suggest is that when replacing mods its worth getting a wide geographical spread, so that people are active at different times. As an example I can't remember if Anna is still in Japan, but if she is and wanted the job then I think she'd be a good idea for if I'm rotated out.
Already told you that once we do the hand-over I'm done with being any sort of staff. If you want to keep me in the loop for suggestions that's fine, but I'm not going to run anything.
Lanz, I suggested you for the Workshop because you've frequently expressed interest in doing more with it. But I can totally understand your desire to step away from day to day. Anyway, the job's yours if you ever want it. Like you, I would love to see that become a bigger feature, I just don't have the content knowledge to do much there on my own.
My medical situation is becoming more complex at the moment and I am exhausted. I just can't handle making databases, doing research, writing handbooks, learning to understand different software while toxic blood is making my thinking fuzzy. Plus I have procedures, testing and surgeries to face as well. I've only stayed this long because Lanzman needed me, and he clearly doesn't anymore with everything changing very soon. I would like to step down as of now. I would like to continue in an advisory capacity if possible, as has been the tradition with past Admins as that is a way to continue to help out when I am feeling well enough and able to. I really love this place and all of you and wish you well...I just need to focus on trying to get somewhat better for now. Hopefully, if you ever need me in the future, I will be in a better place to do more again. So, Lanzman, if you will, make me a citizen again.
Tamar, I hope your medical position improves quickly! Would you be able to stay on for two weeks until things have calmed down from the handover/upgrade? You're health must of course come first, but I just wanted you to know that your help would be greatly appreciated.
In two weeks or less I will be on an operating table. I would probably be doing this regardless of the ownership situation. I'll still be around the board and will be happy to advise and hope you will still allow me to help when I can, but I just can't be consistant right now...hell, I can't promise I'll be awake in the next 30 minutes. Besides, my stepping down is a dream come true for a lot of people. It will probably help you more than anything.
As I've done for the last several years, I plan to continue being an "Admin in Being" and lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce.
Keep me on if you feel it would do the board good. Take me off if you feel like it. I leave the decision up to you.
mentioned in another thread....i'm not staff and don't have the desire to be, but i'm down to keep helping out with the smilies. please don't get rid of them!
Uh... that's actually a good point. @Nick (this is a seriously cool feature of the new software), how do we save our smilies? They obviously don't make it over.
I'll stay on, with the caveat that I seem to have something of a life lately, and it's not trending away from that.
I have saved the smilies (and all the other images). Migrating the mapping between text and picture will be harder.
