@frontline mentioned this. I've noticed it as well, but it isn't that bad for me. Are others having issues? If so, what can be done about it? Start archiving threads after 2 years? More space/RAM? Any other ideas?
Not being able to look under the hood, it looks like a code issue where by a system call is being made, but the software is doing a lousy job of handling the requests
The software is a bit kludgy, because it's modular. You snap pieces in to create more of a whole, but those pieces don't always work well together, so you end up having calls ignored or put on low priority, or outright rejected because of a tiny bit of code here or there that doesn't work like it's supposed to. Also, some of the add-ons may be bogging it down. I can say for absolute certainty that the reputation add-on has caused about 3 dozen minor server errors in the past 3 days, mostly issues with a line function here or there. So that's the software side of it. There's a possibility it may be the host, too. I'm not sure who you have, but if it's a shared host, make sure they're not overloading their own servers at your expense. Since it looks like we won't be using the reputation system, I'll be completely pulling that out tonight, which should help a little bit.
Im thinking it is a core issue because it was acting slowly even before adding rep. For instance hitting the "like" button took several seconds (say about 5). Ditto for posting a comment.
Oh, certainly, the board itself isn't very fast. When I process commands or add-ons in the Admin CP, sometimes it takes ages just to update the templates, which shouldn't be more than a few seconds at most, can sometimes stretch out to 5 or 10 minutes. Hell, deleting or accepting registration requests can take 4 or 5 minutes to process, even if there's only one or two.
I've noticed that on the admin side too, hadn't so much on the BBS side, though now that Frontline mentions it, the like button is often pretty slow. How do we find out if the server could be an issue?
I can find that out. Edit: Well, I ran some diagnostic download, connection, and ping tests on the server and it seems rather sprightly, so it's not likely the server.
I've noticed things like that, but there's no consistency to them. So, sometimes hitting the like button or posting a comment will take ages, other times it'll be lightning fast. I don't know if it has something to with the board being under heavy load, or if there's a connection issue.
I just liked and unliked a post a couple of times and didn't notice a big lag. I do sometimes get hung up on the alerts menu. I know scripts that update pages in realtime without you needing to refresh are what basically everyone does now, but I personally could live without it...
