Freshman Congressman Trey Radel charged with cocaine possession.

According to court charging documents, on Oct. 29, Radel "unlawfully, knowingly and intentionally possessed" a quantity of cocaine. The charges are as a result of a D.C. Superior Court Grand Jury indictment.

Radel was charged Tuesday and will be arraigned Wednesday. He faces a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

In a statement, he said problems with alcohol led to an "extremely irresponsible choice" and said he will seek treatment.

"I'm profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida," Radel said. "I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As the father of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them."

Supposedly, he voted to require welfare recipients to undergo drug testing before they could collect benefits. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I don't have a problem with that, provided we require elected law makers to take IQ tests first.

Agreed.. Of course I think ALL laws being forced on American citizens should be enforced on elected officials including ACA.

John Boehner has made swiftly dealing with bad behavior a signature of his leadership, at times working behind the scenes to orchestrate an exit or levy a punishment on lawmakers caught in ethical or legal mishaps.

But House Republican leaders are not calling for first-term Rep. Trey Radel (R-Fla.) to step down after he pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to possessing cocaine. Radel was swept up in a drug sting in October by an undercover police officer and an “acquaintance” with whom he had done cocaine, according to court documents.

Just ask Trey Radel, the freshman congressman who's getting ready to tender his resignation and head home to Florida, bidding adieu to colleagues like Senator David Vitter and Representative Mark Sanford. Radel—who famously billed himself as a "hip-hop conservative"—was busted in October for buying cocaine from an undercover officer in D.C.'s Dupont Circle neighborhood.

What followed is a case study in scandal management. When the news broke in November—to snickers—Radel adopted the time-tested suite of standard strategies: a tortured apology to his constituents, family, and colleagues; a leave of absence from Congress; and a spell in rehab to get himself straightened out. He was also sentenced to a year of probation for a misdemeanor cocaine possession charge.
