Seriously - is she so deep in denial that she's drowning in it?
Scenario: woman is attacked by thugs. Forget calling it "the knockout game" and let's just call it what it is - the price to pay for living in a shit-hole like Washington D.C.
So the other thugs were laughing at her. She should consider herself lucky - in most cities they would all jump in and beat her ass into the next world - maybe D.C. isn't that bad.
Regardless, she has the liberal victim role NAILED! Guess what - now I'm laughing at her too!

Yes, Let's all see what we can do to reason with these kids, and figure out why they do this crazy shit.

Here's a pic of what needs to be done when too many predators are in our midst. Mind you this is just a metaphor. Fuck a midnight basketball program.

    Median Home Price in Washington D.C. - $ 435,400
Median Home Price in Augusta GA - $ 73,500

I think you are confusing the D.C. of the 80s with the D.C. of today.

You can call D.C. a shithole all you want, but A LOT of people want to live there, and with their ridiculous zoning laws keeping supply down all that demand has increased prices significantly.

I am thinking critically about how such attacks can be stopped.

So the more you pay for your home the safer your city is? By that rationale someone in Camden New Jersey would be safer than someone in Burley Idaho. Interesting take on things, but statistics might disagree.

No, it's not a safety metric, but it does give an indication of desirability. People are willing to pay more to live in DC than Augusta. And from the stories you tell, it's not hard to see why. DC is certainly not the safest major city, but nor is it a dangerous shit hole. To the extent that it is dangerous, people are willing to put up with it in exchange for the benefits.

Second point, is that crime stats for a major city can usually be explained by just a few neighborhoods. Boston is like that -- most violent crime takes place on a few specific blocks where gangs and drug dealing are significant problems. Elsewhere, it's quite safe.

Dangerous neighborhoods aside - are there people as naive and idealistic as this in cities all across our great land? If we had more people like her...we'd have less people like her. Kind of like the kid who gets whipped by the head-master and says "thank you sir, may I have another?" How low does your self esteem need to get to not want to beat the ever loving dog-shit (or worse) out of some street scum who physically assaults you?

D.C. is one of those backward, primitive places that doesn't allow commoners to carry guns, isn't it? Just askin'

Naivete knows no boundaries, you can find afflicted people everywhere. People who make blanket statements about cities being dangerous are a good example of this.
Maybe it takes more self esteem to realize that acting on such desires might not actually improve things. An eye for an eye and we all go blind, right?
How does that figure in to this? Should she have shot somebody for laughing at her?

I've lived there and I call it a shithole all the time. Never heard more gun shots in my life. Never seen more streetwalkers in my life. Never seen more crack heads in my life . . . well maybe Baltimore. The "nice" areas of DC compensate for all of this by hosting the largest collection of douche bags the world has ever seen. It's a shithole.

And they wonder why we think some of them shouldn't be allowed to play with sharp objects.

    Because, yanno, this:

...is apparently "dumb," whereas shooting someone for "disrespecting" them, OTOH...

Heh. By the time his current wife's lawyers get through with him, he may be pointing that in a different direction...

Or concentration of status seekers. You know the ones that will put up with the shit hole just to say they live in DC so they appear to be "in". Money is no indicator of brains or class, just the ability to have lake whores.

She found fault with the popularity of so-called "knockout" videos.

"Instead of constantly replaying them on media, or on YouTube, or whatever it is, you know I really feel like that's just creating more of a culture of fear and polarization -- instead of actually spending time thinking about why it is that people are choosing to do this and how can it be stopped and prevented," she said.
...is apparently "dumb," whereas shooting someone for "disrespecting" them, OTOH...

I think that punching someone in the head with enough force to attempt to knock them out goes just a wee bit past "disrespect" and edges into begging for a bullet.
And I admit I don't spend much time thinking about why people choose to do this (assault people in the street) and how it can be stopped because I have my own kids to raise and family to take care of, protect, and mentor so my kids don't end up trying to knock out innocent people.

Oh and I don't know anything about D.C. in the 80's. All I know is my trip there last year, where the locals were so fucking rude and arrogant it made me never want to return. 400,000 dollars to deal with insane traffic and surly assholes the second you leave your enclave? Better you than me.
75,000 median home price in Augusta is for the hood. The other side of the tracks 150,000 is about normal, and would get you the same home that costs 400,000 in a decent part of D.C. Thus people from D.C. move here in droves, but we don't reciprocate. We have constant violent crime but not in my county, where the demographic balance tilts toward "safer" and many people are armed, and self defense shooting is tolerated and/or outright encouraged. Thus any trend of punching random victims would end tragically for the wayward youths, and they would never realize their dream of having tea and a quilting bee with Garamet or punching bag lady.
