Yeah, but I continued from there to discuss the problems with such judgments, ending by saying I didn't have answers. You see what you want to see I suppose, but nowhere did I call for making restrictions based on my own biases.
All right, I'll jump in: there ARE reasons we should care what kind of food people buy with public assistance. Nutrition education is a problem (as in, many people not having very much of it). A lot of people on food assistance are caring for kids. If they're buying little 79-cent single-serving bags of potato chips with their food stamps (which I've seen), the money's going to run out quickly and the kids aren't going to be getting anything approaching decent nutrition. That's a decision the kids have no say over, but they're the ones who pay the price.
So you make the judgement, and reel it back in? Plus at the beginning, minus at the end. You may as well have not spoken. For you to "gotcha", me, you have to look like an idiot. Better you had just answered my "why?".
Now see, this is better. Anyway, shit food is cheaper. Not only do they need the nutritional information, but a couple extra bucks would help.
In response to Dicky's "gotcha" concerns: Isn't this a discussion board? Doesn't that mean we raise issues, ask questions? Do you not have the ability to see a difference between expressing a personal opinion and forcing that on others? Maybe you should look in the mirror when thinking about where the idiot is in this exchange, because you've just articulated a basis for your shutting the fuck up in every religion thread.
Sorry, you mis-characterized my post, and you've been trying to squirm out of it ever since. Time to own the mistake.
Where? You made a value judgement, you rescinded that value judgement in the same post, I decided not to care, because "rules", don't matter if you already broke them, and you're still dodging.
I see this a lot, but I'm not sure. Seems like the issue is that shit food is more convenient (and popular). It's definitely possible to eat healthily on a shoestring budget, but you have to shop carefully, spend a couple hours a day cooking, and perhaps adjust your body to do without the massive doses of sugar and sodium found in most prepackaged foods.
All right, so what do ya do? Take 'em to special classes? Then it begs the question why the rest of us don't get them.
Food stamps are what you use to buy Doritos and candy to bribe your kids because you didn't raise them right. The real food comes from standing in line begging at the food banks instead of looking for work.
I I eat good food but I don't cook for hours a day. And if do make something that takes hours it does not take my attention that whole time. I can watch TV, I can clean all different parts of my house, depending on the dish I might be able to go work outside or work on my tan.
Dramatic little bitch, aren't ya? He's not talking about feeding them gruel. Imagine encouraging healthy, nutritious food for our nation's poor so they can look better, feel better and raise non-obese kids that won't be saddled with future health problems due to a horrible diet. One wonders how gul sleeps at night.
I just meant that if you're making everything from scratch it's going to be better for you and probably cheaper in the long run but also take longer.
How do you make people use food stamps on healthy food instead of junk? No idea, or at least none that isn't excessively punitive or authoritarian.
This is true. One of the problems with our stagnating wages is that many of the working poor have to work multiple jobs so don't have the time to cook. While I do think there should a refinement of what SNAP will and won't pay for, I think the 'No Hot Food' rule should be looked at as well. I'd prefer healthy prepared meals to a bag of Doritos and a soda any day.
Anc, think you got your head caught up your own ass again. On the bright side, it's good that you never deviate from message - shows how sincere you are if you keep saying it.
Uh, no it wouldn't. Retailers that accept SNAP have a system that checks the items wrung up when you pay with EBT. All you have to do is add items to the not allowed list.
That would violate the human rights of food stamp users by embarrassing them. Not to mention totally racist.
And can you imagine the fun of being in the checkout at Safeway behind them then? The dual transaction you already see for the food stamps and the second checkout for the "forbidden" items and the bitching and haggling over what is and isn't allowed will only get slower and uglier.
You don't think it's excessively authoritarian to tell people, "We've decided for your own good what you're allowed to eat and what you're not"? Some might say it's part and parcel of accepting public aid, but I still don't think many people would stand for it.
We already do that. Why not? If I give you a sandwich am I required to give you a bag of chips and a soda as well?
This. Funny how it's always shot down by the Think of the Chiiiiiildren side, who I find either don't have kids themselves, or are so afraid that if other kids are healthy and motivated their own kids are at risk of being seen as mediocre, as if wanting a nation of healthy, motivated kids is somehow un-American.
Only in the broadest possible terms, or with targeted programs like WIC. If you've been giving me chips and a soda, and one day you tell me I can't have them anymore, I might feel like you're being unfair. Doesn't mean I'm right, but it's something you're going to have to deal with.
Used to only certain food products could be bought with EBT (the ones the USDA subsidized, which is why SNAP is a USDA program). Is this not the case anymore? Regardless, if we had it once we could have it again. It's not YOU (the person in this situation) I'm actually worried about. The real push back will be from the soda and chip manufacturers.
Ummm yeah I make food from scratch. Once you do you realize it doesn't really take a lot of time. I'm not talking making pasta but the sauce you put on it, easy peasy and no time to make. Mac and cheese 20 min all together. A chicken breast grilled or baked. Frozen veggies. If you are using more than a few ingredients you are doing it wrong. Good Restaurant food has 5 give or take ingredients.
