And please let my city be one of the areas....... Like I said I hope this is accurate and I hope my area is one of those metropolitan areas.
Yeah, would be good to see a list of the cities. The new mayor here has said he will have an announcement about improving high speed infrastructure in Boston. And he is being somewhat secretive. Fingers crossed that this is the announcement. There is actually a shitload of fiber in Boston, built during the telecom speculative 90s before the big bust. But it is not tied together in a coherent system, and in many cases just stops a few blocks before getting to where it needs to be. I think the trick would be mapping what's here, then connecting it all, so Google likely wouldn't have to install that much, just rationalize things.
The should start small, like in my little town full of techie geeks. Who do we contact to get Google's attention? But at $120/month, that's about twice what I currently pay. Might not be worth it, unless the price is expected to come down significantly over a few years.
I wouldn't pay that price either. I see this mostly as a boon to businesses that want the high speed infrastructure. But that's a good thing for anybody in these cities, whether or not they sign-up themselves.
I honestly don't understand why Google isn't a lot more aggressive with this. They have the money for a nationwide expansion.
If they drop fiber in Cincinnati, we'll reap the benefits of it, even though my town consists of 8,000 people. We're within 30 miles of Cincinnati, and it would scare the local Telcos and Cable companies shitless. Maybe AT&T would get their shit together, finally.
Dammit. They put Provo a little too far to the east and north, and Portland's so far south it's where Corvallis and Albany are
I think they are only expanding where there are pre-existing fiber networks to get them started or where the cities have committed to building one at the very least.
There's big talk that Google is going to announce tomorrow morning that they're bringing their service here. I don't think any of the teevee stations is reporting it, but the paper is.
