Perhaps - I can use it when I quote the whole nine yards at a time, but maybe I only want to quote just a part of what somebody said. That I have not yet mastered.
My brain is wired a little differently than that of the average person, and I accept that.

I wonder how many of these yahoos saying "just wait for the police" have ever been actually home during a home invasion. I was once. Home from school sick. I was really fucking lucky the intruder wasn't armed (it wasn't as common back then as it is now). Scared the hell out of me then, probably would scare me more now.

After multipull run-ins with these intruders, I don't really blame the guy for taking the law into his own hands. The cops did nothing to stop them the first time, the second, etc...What the hell was he supposed to do? More & more I'm wondering if uniformed police are worth the tax-payer expense. They arrive after a crime has been committed. They don't do much to actually prevent it.

That's one reason why the Constitution gives us the right to defend ourselves. When this country began families were many miles from civilization. Now we have an arrival time of minutes at best - imagine hours or days! Hell it's still days for our Alaskan citizens. When you live in a country chock-full of people that are dead-enders and have no problem with going to prison, don't be surprised when you are caught off guard. A liberal is nothing but a conservative who hasn't been robbed yet.

They almost always arrive after the crime.

Not their fault. It's just the way it is. It's rare for them to get there before the crime or during it.

Realistically speaking it's asking too much of police to prevent crime. Unless you want a police state that watches everyone 24-7 which is where we are slowly heading.

There are ways to prevent crime, but they involve larger societal based efforts. Direct police intervention works in crowd settings and such, but yeah, it's unlikely to work against home invasion. The thing is, a properly stored and secured gun will also likely not work.

That's the catch-22 of it. Keeping the gun accessable but out of curious hands!

My mentality isn't "wait for the police," it's a question of the statistical likelihood of a home invasion where I live. I would never expect the cops to show up in time to apprehend someone even if I had time to call 911 during such a situation; are there people who actually think that's what happens?

Apparently, since much of the time a discussion of having a gun in the house is countered by people saying you shouldn't, because all you have to do is call the police.

WAIT! Didn't Joe "shotgun" Biden say all you have to do is chamber a shell in a pump shotgun and bad guys flee?
Hell, if the sound does it why even buy shells? That should save you a lot on ammo.

No one actually said people shouldn't have guns in the house, just that doing so is a risk. It's a risk that can be mitigated any number of ways. Then again, burglary/home invasion is another risk, and guess what? That, too, can be mitigated any number of ways, and "call and wait for the police" is only one of them. There are ways to make one's house harder to break into, give you more warning about an impending crime, etc. I find it puzzling that some of you insist on making this a simple choice between "have guns in the house" and "pray to God the police show up in time." It's not.

I suppose, but one can't count on a best case scenario. It's better to prepare for the worst, IMHO.
The two worst case home invasions are 1) waking up and finding a burglar already in the house; 2) the "push-in" type where someone knocks on your door and forces their way in when you answer. The former may run when confronted, or may not. The latter is generally not done by a person you can reason with - those are the people who want to hurt you for fun. Calling the police is not an option in either case.

I take that to mean you always answer the door with a gun in hand?

Or don't answer the door, ever?

I dont fear home invasion much out here, it is accepted that we all have guns, so that really isnt a thing. Most buglaries happen when the thieves know you're gone, so you dont post it on facebook.

I have guns because they're legal, and I like them. End of discussion.

There's a gun handy to the front door. I personally hate answering the door if it's a stranger - I truly hate being bothered at home. If I don't recognize the person thru the window, and if the "no solicitors" sign has failed, then yes, I may just have a 9 behind my back when I answer.

How should the risk be minimized? By ignoring the US Constitution? By amending it and removing the right?

Based on the conversations in this forum, apparently if you've had guns in the house all your life, you can't conceive of a third alternative.

Is the third alternative falling down into the fetal position pissing yourself and praying for a quick, merciful death?
That's pretty much the Liberal default SOP.

I occasionally hear something like "I don't need a gun, I keep a baseball bat by the door."

Fuck, I don't wanna get that close to the guy! :wtf:

There's also the point that you need to be willing to club a violent intruder into submission, which carries as much a chance of killing him as does shooting him, and a bigger chance of him taking the bat away from you since you're obviously in arm's reach.

The effectiveness of a baseball bat under typical circumstances. Yes, it works temporarily, but after he wakes up......not so much.
That said, you have to have the will to "finish the job."

Yeah, I never really thought about it in those terms, but anybody who would prefer to use a bat over a gun is one sick puppy. That's some up-close, in-your-face, sustained brutality right there.
