Garamet may be right, or she may be embellishing, or she may flat out be lying. DeWeese's notes and recordings likely wouldn't prove or disprove anything Garamet say happened behind the scenes with Rock Star or any of her story's other villains. But it certainly would shed light on what he thought of her original story, the parts he liked, the parts he didn't like, etc. What is there to fear about any of that information seeing the light of day?

I agree, it could make for interesting reading. But is there any evidence of it being feared by ... well, anyone?

Yanno, Flashy claims to have read the account on my site. If he actually had, he'd have come across this:

I.e., he never saw the original manuscript until I sent him a photocopy long afterwards.

What's exceptionally pathetic is that Flashy really doesn't understand the first thing about the writing process. Whatever notes Gene took in meeting that very short deadline would make a great teaching tool for a creative writing class, not fodder for TMZ.

And the "attorney" doesn't understand that if I were lying, I'd have left myself vulnerable to lawsuits, as would the numerous other sources that have quoted me since.

But it is fun watching his IQ deteriorate further with each post.

I've read only two Star Trek novels my whole life.

Shatner's 'The Return' and the novelization of Star Trek II.

Never had the slightest bit of interest in reading any others.

I've read a few back in the early '80's. The only one I remember was called "Spock's World". I avoid franchise books like he plague. Except for "Shadowrun" books. Most of what I've read in the past most resemble literary masturbation...

Yes, he does seem to have pushed WAB's "Flashlight Should Die" button.

Oh, by "push buttons" you meant "Inspire the adults to get into an interesting discussion while simultaneously pointing and laughing at him."

In that case he's provided more content to this thread than you have.

You know, the problem with posting at work on my phone is that I can't format my responses the way I like, and some of the functionality is lost. I also can't quote and go line by line as I prefer to do. So I have to wait until I get home, by which time I've forgotten half of what I was going to say.

Garamet has expended a lot of energy in this thread trying to convince folks there's no man standing behind the Gene DeWeese curtain. I would wager that 30 seconds after seeing this thread she was on the phone to the USM library trying to see if anyone had called seeking access to the collection.

As I said above, I doubt there would be anything in there that would prove or disprove the details of her story of victimhood. He wouldn't have been privy to any of her dealings with Rock Star and others.

I will point out that her contention that DeWeese never saw a copy of her original manuscript, is contradicted by other things I've read, which I will post later today. According to what I've read, he ended up re-incorporating many of her original story elements. How could he have done that if he had no knowledge of what she had originally written? It makes no sense that he would be asked to do a rewrite and never be shown what he was supposed to rewrite.

And we'll spend the whole thread watching Garamet yet again dodge the issue of artistic integrity, why she accepted money for work that wasn't her own, why she didn't donate any and all profits she received related to Probe to the man who actually wrote it.

Why would you imagine I would care? Your quarrel is not with me.

However, I'm intrigued by your choice of words. You asked me to guess what you "just did."

    Now, yesterday, you:
    • Started your 16th thread trolling a poster you’re apparently fixated on for no known reason
    • Displayed your ignorance of how academic research works
    • Displayed your ignorance of the writing process and what a writer’s notes consist of
    • Displayed your ignorance of contract law, entertainment law, and possibly jaywalking laws as well, and
    • Attempted without success to malign the reputation of a dead man
So, what you have you "just done"?

Gassed up the car in preparation for your road trip with Face?

How soon before you claim to have "won" this thread?

Did they ever say why her manuscript got rejected? Was it because she tried making Sulu heterosexual in in, in direct conflict with established canon? :marathon:

This is an excellent question and one which you'll never get her to answer honestly (surprise, surprise).

The short answer is that her story focused on a lot of non-TOS elements and characters. Essentially the same reasons Harlan Ellison's original script for City on the Edge of Forever was rejected.

Why would she do this? Because characters she created whole-cloth she could retain rights over, meaning she could spin them off into other works. She wanted to piggyback her stuff on the Star Trek label, and her editor recognized what she was doing and demanded that the story be re-focused to the main cast.

Of course garamet will claim that none of the preceeding is true, but will offer no explanation herself. She will claim the info is protected by a non-disclosure agreement, or she'll claim she was never told. So, either you believe that the people she was working with were as amoral & duplicitous as she portrays, or you conclude there are things she isn't admitting to about why folks reacted to her the way they did.

Do you also believe Alec Guinness was a mass murderer? I mean, he did play Hitler, right? Or are you just sad because Thelma & Louise didn't invite you on their road trip?

Of course not. According to the accepted wisdom, Flashy is not a one-note troll, nor are his posts "derp."

You know, writer's records usually are interesting; a repeated Star Trek's writer's records are probably of increased interest to our crowd; and as far as it also touches on garamet's writing, the interest will be greater still. So if Flashlight were capable and willing to prepare something in reference to those records, that would probably be quite nice. Genuinely so.

The only mystery is why he thinks he either will, or needs to, antagonize garamet over it. He clearly doesn't, since she shares all of those interests, and why on Earth should he?

...Wait, has garamet become Margaret? Or is that a dual of some kind?

He won't. He'd be afraid the investigation might be traced back to his RL identity and that's one of his worst fears.

If you'll notice, one of his recurring themes is "the sweaty Trekkie who tried to get her to read his manuscript." Very telling, no?

Certain trolls pretend to a familiarity they are not entitled to. The dual serves as a buffer. ;)

ETA: Gene and I maintained an extensive correspondence after the fact. He was generous in sharing all of his written notes with me. I still have that correspondence. So even if Fat Joe Sweaty Palms did post something he claimed was from Gene's archive, I'd know he was lying about that as about so much else.

Huh. So the account with the RL first name is a buffer for the account with the established nickname. Immediately understandable to anyone who's been on the net since the late 90s, but who would have guessed ten years earlier? Aren't humans interesting?

I'm enjoying this thread. Nowhere near as much as you are, but still.

    No, you killed him.
You killed him with your bare hands.
Then you held his body over your head, howled at the moon, and tossed him from a bell tower to the horrified crowd below.
Then you made your escape with your evil lice infested bat wings.
You thought you'd gotten away with it, but Mr. Deweese's spirit screams out for vengeance.
    You will be punished.
And the way you will be punished......is to be trolled on an obscure message board by a nobody!

Worth the travel time and expense of traveling from somewhere in deepest Oklahoma to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on the remote chance of learning that someone who frequents the same BBS as you might have spun the story of a decades old event to her own advantage?

Sure, that'd be well worth it, and not at all creepy or obsessive. And it's likely to be a far better, and more rational, use of your time than any of your other pursuits in life.

By all means, go for it.
