Just anecdotally, it seems as if the smaller the PD, the more likely it is to attract power-tripping cowboys...
Exactly. Because the police believe they were in the right in the Garner situation. It is possible to do something as a LEO believing you are justified in your actions then have people above you say you did wrong. If Garner had lived this video still may have gone viral but the odds are that the officer would have got no more then a slap on the wrist and maybe a stiff warning not to choke someone like that again.
Yes, that would be anecdotally. And completely incorrect. I am trying so hard NOT to get involved in this over blown, convoluted thread. Really, I think its run its course.
Not a bad imitation of gturner, but about as relevant. Why don't you start a thread about Eric Holder?
Is there really any point? As I said earlier, people have made up their minds and its just frustrating to watch this thread go round and round. If I thought it would make a difference I'd give it a shot....
I assume you joined here to get involved in discussions. Kinda pointless not to. See, I've lived in two major metropolitan areas, and I have friends and family in the NYPD. What I learn on message boards about small-town policing informs my opinion about power-tripping cowboys. Small sample size, granted, but as it's outside my area of expertise, I pay attention.
Uh, have you seen the comments here? That's WTF I'm talking about. Did any of you ever stop to consider that you can't condemn all police because of the actions of a few assholes? And to say small town cops are the worst is just ignorant. What the hell kind of facts back that up?
Who's condemning all police? One - Garamet didn't say small town cops are the worst. Two - She didn't claim anything was a fact. In fact she said the opposite. She prefaced by saying it was just anecdotal. If anecdotal evidence were taboo, we'd have to ban Oldfella...and I'd get more than a few warnings at the very least. Besides...from Garamet's perspective, Places like Knoxville and Charlotte are probably "small towns".
Yes I did! But, these blasé comments being tossed around are just too much. I know, this is the red room, no sympathy, yada yada. All right, I'll spit it out and move on.
I live in a relatively small town. I have two brother's (1 retired now) who were/are on the force. As well as my husband. We all grew up here, blah blah. There's no cowboy attitudes. Well there are a couple of losers, but when aren't there, right? I see these guys & women working their asses off, always maintaing professional attitudes. I don't know how the hell they do it. I'd be beating and tazing some of these assholes they put up with. And surprisingly for a small town we've had some crazy shit come through. Too many deets, but their lives have been on the line many times. I'm still going, hold on a second
The conversation is controlled by the input of participants. @Patty, if you find the discussion to be missing some pieces, put it in there for us. If the quality of information is weak, take on the upgrade and give us what you've got. Of course, if what you've got is also anecdotal, well then, rocks in glass houses and all that, so I can see why you might rather pretend not to bother than risk the broken glass.
Damn it.. Obviously I'm having trouble here, huh. Two years ago this Sunday, we had a shooting at Sandy Hook Elemantary. Idk if you're all familiar with what happened, but this was unfuckingbelivable. 5 & 6 year olds slaughtered. Just too F'd up too explain. What person in their right mind could. And every small town cop in this area stepped up. Straight into the horror, no hesitation. And its STILL not done. The children are going to my old school and they get death threats, we just had a bomb threat cple weeks ago
Besides and before that tragedy, I have never seen anything but these people put themselves in harms way to save others. And, never mind the fucking idiots, who want to fight, run, wrestle. I give the solo much credit for being able to not reach out and touch someone- lo!. And I a smaller town they're all under a magnifying glass. Ridiculous, but true. The Commissioner's have nothing better to do!
I'm sorry. I've got ADD and even I can't keep up with your...I don't know what to call it without coming across as a dick. Multiphasic line of thought?
There is no doubt a lot of variation among different forces. Even over the course of time, perceptions change. Boston PD 20 years ago had a really bad reputation on racial issues. Now it's mostly well respected. Ferguson doesn't look too good, but maybe the folks around Newtown are top notch. I don't find myself thinking that just because cops I interact with are good guys, they necessary all are. You he to evaluate each on its own merits.
Yep. That's why I should've just kept out of it. Anyway, if it matters, these cops all think the NYC incident was totally f'd up and that cop should've been kicked to the curb. He was not handling it as they're trained to.
There! Thank you.. That's it exactly. Cripes, I just can't get a clear line of thought after all that shit. But, as I said there's always fuck ups. Only here there weeded out quickly. One cop shot himself in the ass!! Yes! Lol.... He was gone pdq
I figure it has less to do with training and more to do with, I think I heard it referred to "broken window policing"? The way I understand it it's saying, "Okay. Today we're going to ignore the major crimes and just come down on the pip-squeek evil doers. Let's be careful out there." I'm kind of starting to believe the "We need more training." narrative is starting to smell. NYC cops aren't well trained enough? Seriously?
My experience and observation has shown the opposite to be true. The bigger the department, the easier it is for the bad ones to "hide". And because they're more likely to be unionized, the harder it is to shitcan them when they're found out.
