He would not have been confirmed in January, as he was nominated only because he's a major pro-Obama political activist who co-founded Doctors For Obama, served on an Obama steering committee, and acted as an Obama campaign adviser. Former Surgeon General Carmona (who recently ran for office as a Democrat) noted that Vivek is barely out of residency and went on to write

"I believe that medical education is a lifelong process, and with each challenge — from treating AIDS patients to running a hospital in an underserved community to responding to a multiple-person shooting — doctors become better doctors. And being afforded the honor of being the nation's doctor is a position that is earned after years of accumulated knowledge working with diverse populations in demanding situations.

The surgeon general must have the skills and, more importantly, the experience, to inform the government's leaders, educate the American public and help heal the ailing public health sector.

Someday, Murthy may very well attain the knowledge and experience to be a trusted surgeon general. However, to put him in this position so early in his career would only serve to weaken the position — and could doom Murthy to failure.

So add another under-qualified political hack to Obama's big team of them.

You're right abut one thing, he would not have been confirmed in January. But it has nothing to do with qualifications, and entirely to do with politics.

Well yeah, because his qualifications are purely partisan and political. He's only been out of residency eight years. I've never even had a doctor that young and inexperienced.

    Because you say so?

    And -?

Ah, so you don't understand the distinction between "general surgery" and "surgeon general." You may leave the thread now.

Perhaps you should go up and read the article where a previous surgeon general said the pick was unqualified. Perhaps you should note that three prior surgeon generals are in agreement on that point. The Acting Surgeon General was highly experienced and had been doing the job for a year or more, yet was passed over because he wasn't a political hack, just an extremely competent physician with on the job experience of doing what the Surgeon General does, plus a ton of other qualifications that got him the job of Acting Surgeon General.

Maybe if you hadn't been spinning so hard since you came here you might have a modicum of credibility. As it stands, you've got a long way to go to get it back.

Tell you what, though. We promise not to let him treat your aspiration pneumonia after you've been waterboarded. :)

Credibility is irrelevant. This is basic -- you know this one. Address the claim, not the claimant.

In other news, investigators have finally linked Garamet to a string of fires. They could tell it was her because the meat residue was overcooked and under seasoned.

When the claimant provides actual evidence, yes. Until then, EbolaMan and credibility don't belong in the same sentence.

Perhaps you have something to say about the office of the Surgeon General?

Just compare some of the qualifications.

    C. Everett Koop: Age when confirmed, 65. He pioneered neonatal surgery, neonatal intensive care, separating conjoined twins, and a ton of other stuff that had never been successfully done. His groundbreaking role led to him being the first editor of The Journal of Pediatric Care. C. Everett Koop Medical Career

James O. Mason: Age when confirmed, 59. Former head of the CDC, US Assistant Secretary of Health, four star admiral in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and the US Delegate to the World Health Organization.

Antonia Novello: Age when confirmed, 46. Worked her way through the Public Health Service Commission Corps and held a number of positions at NIH, becoming Coordinator of AIDS research and helped draft the organ transplantation act. Antonio Novello

David Satcher: Age when confirmed, 57. President, chairman, and dean at several medical colleges, CDC director, Administrator of the Agency of Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

And most all of them read pretty much like that until you get to Vivek, confirmed at age 37. His wiki brags:

Murthy is a physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a Hospitalist Attending Physician and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also a founder and president of Doctors for America, a group of 15,000 physicians and medical students supporting comprehensive health reform. He has managed staff and hundreds of volunteers, developed and executed strategic plans and nationals and local initiatives around coverage and prevention. He has also directed fundraising, managed budgets, built a broad array of partnerships with community-based organizations across the country.

That's the kind of stuff you write on your resume to a local hospital. He would be one of the junior doctors on the 3rd floor west wing annex of Central Baptist. The only key to why he was nominated is that he was founder and president of what used to be called "Doctors for Obama" back when Obama-Girl went viral for bouncing her T-shirt puppies. He is more qualified than Ron Klain, but probably less medically qualified than Rand Paul, who was a successful eye doctor in Bowling Green - where they make the Corvette.

Here's a question, why do we even need an arbitrary position such as sugen General?

    In a sane world, yes.

Science and the medical profession are structured a bit like pyramids than you have to climb, through brilliance, dedication, hard work, or pretty much super-genius level output. Vivek was still at the bottom rungs of the ladder, only eight years out of residency, having developed no new procedures, conducted no fundamental research, and having authored no major papers, at least that the Internet can find. On the management side he hadn't gone anywhere either, like at least making senior partner in a clinic, much less being a dean or medical college president, which still is only halfway up the pyramid. It's like nominating Wolowitz to be NASA director. If Bush did this people would be screaming. Actually screaming.

It's not about how many years from residency, it's what he has done in those years. His resume speaks for him far more accurately than an Internet troll.

I admit I know nothing about this.
But he might just have been exceptional with his patients, which counts for far more than any of the CV padding measures you've listed.

A big defeat for the NRA. It is about time the NRA stopped being able to dictate everything.

The NRA wanted his nomination defeated because he, like the virtually every other medical establishment in the country, wanted guns to be part of the public heath debate. For this "crime" the NRA said they would defeat his nomination but clearly they were unable to do so.

Didn't Clinton have a Surgeon General pick derailed because she made some comment about masturbation? So it seems the norm is to treat the SG post as an honorary office for someone stodgy and noncontroversial. Clinton tried to buck that trend with Elders and now Obama is going back to the same idea of a younger, activist SG with known positions on political issues.

In fact, I think it was the ebola out break which broke the log jam and ended up convincing Republicans to stop blocking all nominees no matter how qualified. The reason is when the republicans were desperately trying to pretend everyone was going to die from ebola and it was all the President's fault the President could, rightly, point out that the republicans obstructionism meant there was no surgeon general in charge to lead American efforts just like we had no embassadors to Russia or the Ukraine, again, because of republican obstructionism.

That all of the nominees got passed by at least 95 out of 100 votes shows none of the nominees were remotely contreversial and instead republican shit stains were just, once again, putting national security at risk so they could play their usual "I hate that there is a negro in charge" game.

Try reading some of the articles because it spells it out and there is a good reason virtually every medical group in country supports his position.

I didn't ask them. I asked you. So far, your closest approach to an argument isn't very impressive. Virtually every Yeck organization in the country supports the idea that the planet was formed at the whim of a sky fairy six millennia ago. You're going to have to do better than appeals to consensus.
