I can't dispute your last sentence when I give it some thought (as always, there are exceptions), but it's hard to imagine slavery not stripping always the slaves' dignity and humanity, both the African and Irish slaves.

Look at it from Thomas's perspective. Are you saying that his ancestors had no dignity? That they were undignified? He disagrees, strongly.

So Thomas is arguing that dignity and humanity are not in the government's power to give or take away, just as Lincoln said that the government couldn't add or detract to the consecration of the ground at Gettysburg.

Further, blacks retained their dignity and humanity throughout the Jim Crow era. Are you arguing that Martin Luther King had no dignity because he wasn't treated equally? Are you arguing that he'd been stripped of his humanity by Bull Connor? I would argue that Bull Connor, who used fire hoses and attack dogs on black children, was the one with no dignity or humanity.

I have to say thank you to @gturner. You see I just got back from getting my thumb stitched up because I was stupidly using a machete in a completely wrong manner while not wearing gloves. Multiple times before I took a whack at my thumb I thought those clippers on the ground would be much easier, oh and if I wore some gloves I would not have all this sap all over my hands. But no, I did not do any of that shit and gave my thumb a good whack right on the knuckle. Good thing it was the off hand. I was feeling mightry stupid about all of that, and wondering why I was such a dumbass and just getting down on myself, and then I read @gturner 's OP.

If you are using a machete in the manner intended, gloves won't even be a factor. Whatever digit you accidentally hit is either coming off or crushed or ripped the fuck open whether you are wearing gloves or not.
Yes I have a shit-ton of stitches and missing body parts I have collected over the years. The most idiotic? Having a folding pocket knife folding up with my finger still in it! And I bled and bled all over the newly painted floor of the hangar! Talk about feeling foolish.

I know some here mock what I do for a living, but I have acted for people who have come from warzones. People who have been tortured, raped and generally denied all kinds of basic human rights. I am not sure why you think me whacking my thumb with a machete and having to get stitches is bad ass. I could really have done without it. I pretty much regard it as stupid, as I seem to have stated. Please do not think I would encourage someone to do the dumbass thing I did because it does cause injury. If I was trying to be bad ass I would have told you that the local did not work in that area and I pretty much had to sit through the stitches which wasn't so bad.
