I want to trace an image from an image excluding its background.

For example, look at this image:

I only want the Batman's image and not the whole background.

I'm confused about which version of Corel draw should I use. If anybody has knowledge about this, please share :)

Don't use Corel Draw. Download Paint.Net, which is free, and at least as powerful for that sort of thing. (But download it from their website; from other places, you might get adware bundled in with it.)

I could do that trick in a couple of minutes with Paint.Net, but I don't know Corel Draw to tell you how to do it.

Once you've downloaded and installed it, post again and I'll show you how to do the "Batman" trick. It's not hard.

If you HAVE the Corel suite already, you'd used Corel PhotoPaint. There are a few ways to cut out a background.
In the Image menu, "cutout lab" works similar to Photoshop's cut out method.
Your image has sharp enough edges, though, that simply using the magic wand mask tool should do the trick.
Failing that, you can also use the Freehand mask tool to outline the figure and block out the background.

This guy has a bunch of videos for doing photo editing with GIMP, another free option.

Here's one about removing a background:

But GIMP is much harder to use, much less intuitive, than Paint.net.

It is worth checking out their site, and downloading various plug-ins. Some aren't very useful, some are incredibly useful. But always get your plug-ins from the paint.net site (www.getpaint.net). Otherwise, you will get outdated stuff that is incompatible with your current version, and/or all kinds of junkware installed on your computer. And check out the forum, it's extremely useful. (But no trolling allowed; it's not Wordforge.)

I've never used corel draw. I got Corel trace 11 from a friend just to try it out.

My friend is doing t shirt business. He wants me to work with him. All I've to do is to cut designs that he/me/the customer likes then print that image on t shirts.

For that, I'll need to first cut out properly then using corel trace, i can smoothen the edges and make it look like it's handmade.

If you've any other way to do this process please let me know.

I'll try the above suggestions till then. :)

Trace is only for converting a bitmap into a vector format. After that you need a vector editor (CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator) to edit it.

Just be careful with the copyright. Small business off the web likely to be ok. Start making some serious coin and your designs gaining traction, and DC, Warner Bros or whoever owns Batman these days is likely to come after you. :bergman:

So I'll need three softwares for this whole process? First cutting, then trace and then vector editing?

Corel Graphics Suite. All three are in the one package.
But if you're ONLY cutting the background away from Batman and making a PNG file, I don't see why Photoshop or the like wouldn't be enough.

When you're done editing the image, just change the file's extension to .cdr :ramen:

Understood. I didn't actually know Trace was available separately, but I think it saves out as a CDR. From there, your only choice for editing is CorelDraw (.cdr).

The latest version of Corel draw is x7. Could you check if it has all the three options? I'd check but I'm behind in its details. And with all that information instead of what i need makes me overwhelmed as i hate to waste time.

My aunt had it on her Windows 95 computer way back in the day. I remember being more excited about the 1000 different fonts that came with it.

35% of the market, IIRC. It's more popular in Europe than the US.
Photoshop is the go-to for publishing and photographers and artists, of course.
I never even learned PS because our company got PCs in 1993 and PS wasn't available for PC. We had Corel (V3!!) recommended, and have been using it ever since. We're a little behind at work - we have X4 (V14), while 17 is the current version. I love it, and can do anything I need to with it.
Unfortunately for me, the company has been bought by a bigger company, and they want all the graphics depts to homogenize. I'm going to have to go for PS training.

I've used both Adobe PS and Illustrator for print work. Corel does have advantages over Illustrator though. For example you use Corel to number items like tickets, invoices, etc. You an also use it to create mailed items where you have the same artwork but need to send say 1,000 cards out to different addresses. And you also also automatically layout such as business cards, cards, or other items where you might have 10, 12, 18, 24 up of something on a sheet of paper.

^Also CorelDraw supports multi-page documents. I hear the latest Illustrator allows multiple art boards, but is it the same?
I'm currently working on an 80-something page booklet in Draw. I'd have to use InDesign to do the same with an Adobe product, no?

For multipage documents, like a manual, book, etc... you would use InDesign to make a multiple page layout. You can do it in Illustrator, from my experience if you're making a document with a few pages Illustrator is fine. If you're making something that is more than a few pages and is more like a booklet, manual, etc., then you're better off using InDesign.

InDesign is also what you'd use for a mail merge, documents with sequential numbering, etc.

(I actually like the interface of Quark XPress a little better, but InDesign seems to be becoming ubiquitous enough that I'll have to abandon that preference.)
