I tend to go out and hit up a little mom and pop place or one of the many taco shops found around here. Lately, I have been hitting up a mom and pop Greek and American place which seems to have branched off into Mexican food, yes, they really don't define what they do very well. Still, they do offer good honest food at a cheap price. My latest addiction? Their three fish tacos for $3.25 deal ordered to go with two things of their tangy yet chunky salsa. It just hits the spot for that after dinner snack, it is fast, it is cheap, and they serve it to go with a smile. They also make some good poutine or a Greek salad. What is your late night snack food?
Guess I'm too far in suburbia; it wouldn't occur to me to go further than my fridge for a late night snack. I often just have non-caffeinated tea late at night. That has the bonus effect of getting me up and out of bed early in the morning.
It is a ghetto place in La Mesa on El Cajon and 70th street. A friend of mine lives down there and the two of us have been over at her place a bit lately. http://m.yelp.com/biz/elsas-kitchen-san-diego Like I said, they really don't know what they want to be but $3.25 for three large fish tacos is a deal. It is a real hole in the wall next to a liquor store but they some how manage to pull off Greek, American, and Mexican in a good but low rent type of way. Their $8.50 half pound cheese burger with pastrami and poutine with a drink is also good.
The sad thing is when I get home I tend to sit down and watch reruns of Sam the Cooking Guy on public access television. He is like San Diego's own less organized and talented Anthony Bourdain doing regional day trips and home cooking advice. I am officially middle aged.
Nuking 2 cups of macaroni in a glass bowl, then stirring in butter, 3 slices of processed cheese until it melts in, salt, pepper, and a cut up and nuked hot dog. I used to drown it in shakey cheese too, until I found out they put paper pulp in it.
On the upside Sam the Cooking Guy has some good tips about where to find great food cheap down in Baja.
I buy the Kroger brand Mac and cheese in a box, nuke it for 6 1/2 min, add butter and my own cheese and the cheese pack. I worked at Kroger and they buy their brand from other companies who package it for them. Not hot dogs added, maybe some diced tomatoes or green onions.
I've never been a real late night snacker. Sometimes I'll have a bowl of ice cream just before settling in for the night, but that's pretty much it, and it's not frequent.
Yeah, I quit with the late snacks about a year ago. I generally limit my eating to a 12-hour period. It's a good way to maintain or even lose weight.
Totally agree! Technically it's how many calories you ingest in any 24 hour period that matters. However, if you spread your eating out into several meals, it's much harder to manage, and to keep good accuracy in your calorie counting. Also you burn more calories when you exercise (or even at work) when you are in a "fasted" state. Thus if you eat dinner at 6:00 PM, skip breakfast, and lunch at 12:00 noon is your first meal, you fasted for 18 hours. Sleeping does count of course. It used to be "common knowledge" that if you go without food your metabolism slows down - if you go 72 hours or more! Fasts up to 48 hours are fine. Think how we evolved and lived up to a few thousand years ago - hunter/gatherer. You might not kill or find food at regular intervals, but when you do, you eat like there's no tomorrow. Our bodies can adapt to this just fine. What really gives you more "bang for the buck" is doing your cardio/calorie burning/endurance training on an empty stomach. You will exhaust any available fuel quickly and force your body to burn the fat. You might feel dizzy and woozy at first, but you get used to it in a couple of weeks. Strength training is best done in the afternoon a few hours after a light lunch, with your testosterone high. Most men's T peaks in the afternoon. Eat a lot of protein as a snack (or for dinner) because your body really needs it assuming it was a strength workout versus endurance. Even with cardio I don't "dog it." I crank the elliptical up to 25 (the max) and keep it there and my heart-rate at around 150 (90 percent of my maximum for my age) the whole time. If you use the handles as well as the steps and really put your legs and ass into it, it's like punching through molasses and you will indeed feel that burn! Anywho I skip breakfast a couple of times a week and do a day-long fast (skip breakfast and lunch) once a week. I'm losing weight steady but not too fast, but my waist is getting smaller and my neck is not getting smaller - so I'm not losing any muscle (or very much anyway). I track my weight and measurements religiously & meticulously.
Me, too, and I have none. Back when I was in college, I was more inclined to late night snacking. Fortunately, my dorm had an accommodating snack bar. My favorites were grilled cheese sandwiches or milk shakes. If I felt like putting on shoes, quite a few more options were available across the street. All manner of subs, pizza, and burgers, along with an all night cafeteria/diner type place. I loved their knockwurst and baked beans plate.
that sounds like a meal, not a snack. Ice cream, chips, popcorn. Those things are snacks. Meat, cheese, pasta. Those things are meals.
I stop eating at 1:00 AM. I don't really go to sleep until around 7 or 8 AM, but I take a diabetes medication that kicks my stomach's ass, so if I eat after 1 AM, bad bad things will happen in the morning. That said, the late night snack I do have is usually whatever I can grab from the fridge that won't wake everyone else up. Sometimes it's cold bean and bacon soup (which is great!), other times it's cheese and crackers. If I've eaten light that day for whatever reason, I'll splurge on some boxed au gratin potatoes that I cooked earlier and let get cold in the fridge.
Hummus. Baklava. Mirza Ghasemi. A schwarma if boozed up. Sometimes some left over tagine. Great and tasty foods from my animal friends.
I'm with @Faceman on this one. If pussy is unavailable, which is usually the case, whatever is around will do. But sometimes, there is pussy, and those times are awesome times.
Just red wine? What a lightweight! Red, red wine is the real deal....it keeps me rocking, all of the time.
When you microwave it, it gets rubbery and chewy. I actually like it cold. Plus the microwave wakes up the dog, who then knows your eating and has to investigate.
