This. The effects were done on video and the episodes were edited on video as well, which is why they had to pull the original negatives for the remaster. I wouldn't be surprised if DS9 was also edited on video, which would mean having to do the same thing with any remastering.

Yeah but they still haven't put out a soundtrack for Day of the Doctor (with the one of the best remixes of the theme NuWho has done) so I will find the BBC in the night and gut it like a fish.

Same here. And because the DVD packaging was so bad for those sets, I might just throw the DVD sets away. Alas, that won't happen now. Really would love DS9 to be remastered somehow.
On September 8th of this year STAR TREK will officially hit 50! It'd be cool if they theatrically re-released ALL of the Star Trek movies over the year to celebrate.
