http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/necrotizing-fasciitis-flesh-eating-bacteria Almost killed Harry Truman's daughter Margaret about 20 years ago. When Dayton comes back, I intend to bust his balls about (A) not managing his diabetes better and (B) not having had health insurance until he was forced to by the PPACA. Which is not to say I don't think of him fondly...just the contrary. Hang in there, Annalee. Your old man's tough and ornery. If anyone can get through this, he will.
Based on the location he has mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if he loses a foot. That was going to happen anyway with his diabetes. But prosthetics have become so good in recent years, he should be able to adjust pretty well. Also, echo Garamet's comments to Annalee, and pass pn the same to Mrs. Kitchens.
Annalee, I'm so sorry about your daddy, and as Garamet said, he's tough. I know this must be scary, but with Dayton's stubbornness and modern medicine it's a good bet he's going to pull through fine.
Oh, a diabetes thing? Small world, my wife's cousin (he's my age) has diabetes and trouble with a foot/leg and it's giving him a world of grief and concern lately. It's sadly a very widespread illness.
In a way I want Dayton to come to pain from my words and his shortcomings, not succumb to a painful and debilitating infection that any of us can get.karmic realization does not come in a physical form in my opinion. It comes from the realization of what your deeds do to the world you live in and how that reflects back to you from others.
I wasn't really able to respond much earlier, but the first post made me think that Dayton's dad was in the hospital. But then after reading a few of the posts I realized it was Dayton himself. As much as I've gotten into it with him, I've never wished him harm and I really do hope he comes out of this with minimal results. It does piss me off though that his doctor didn't catch it sooner, he's been having issues with this for months now. Maybe it was his stubbornness, but I feel if his doctor had been more vigilant he might have avoided this altogether. It is the way of the 'forge... But then again, as much as we kick people when they're around, we do tend to come together when one of us is down. Of course once they're back up we do kick them around again. Annalee, hang in there. Your dad is a stubborn old coot, but he's tough and loves you and your mom very much. He'll pull through and be around for a long time. We all wish the best for you, your mom, and your Dad. Please pass on our thoughts and best wishes to Dayton and your mom.
How the fuck could you have not heard of this? Flesh eating bacteria has been some serious shit since the early '90s. Actually, I take that back. If you understand how evolution works, then it shouldn't be any surprise to you that antibiotic resistance was discovered shortly after antibiotics became available. I hate to say this because I don't want to upset his daughter, but Dayton's fighting for his goddamned life if he's got a staph infection (which is what she's described). There's been no shortage of media coverage of it, because, again, flesh eating bacteria has been a media favorite since the '90s. HIs diabetes only complicates things. We're about to hit the end of the road with what we can do with antibiotics, and unless folks are willing pony up lots and lots of research dollars, a whole lotta people are going to die. Edu-fucking-cate yourself about shit like this. Don't ask your doc for antibiotics when you're sick, and if the doc prescribes them to you, take all of them until every last pill is fucking gone, because that's your best hope in preventing drug resistant diseases. Because we're headed for a world of shit if people don't start taking this stuff seriously, and the way things are going, it seems likely that they won't.
Take you equal parts of garlic and leak and grind them together, than an equal mix of red wine and cow bile and put it all in a brass jar and let it sit for nine days, Then strain it through a cloth and then use it as a salve on MRSA infections. It's more effective than the antibiotics we're using now. link
Update: Dad is doing okay. Of course right now that's not saying much. I will keep you all updated periodically.
Diabetes by itself is very scary. I manage the fuck out of mine. I'm not dying at 50 or losing a limb, and I don't want it to happen to anyone else. If nothing else is taken away from this, just remember to take care of yourselves. The future shows up faster than you think, and it brings major problems that can be curtailed if watched early on, and proper steps taken.
I had a busy day at work and this is the first time I've been able to check in all day. But thank you all for keeping this thread civil. Godspeed, Dayton.
Thing is, if anyone truly takes this place seriously then that's a matter for them (waves at John Castle). It's always been a testament to the people here that when shit like this happens, all that nonsense is put aside. For all Dayton's twisted nonsense, I've always had a soft spot for him. I've said it multiple times both on board and in PM. I just don't think he believed it!
I don't get people. "I don't want to upset his daughter, but I'll say it all anyway". Perhaps we wait until he's okay for this discussion?
I wouldn't treat that as a given. Dayton said he suffered from sores on his feet caused by the diabetes. But that isn't how this develops. This is an infection and a fast movie one. It's likely that the infection attacked him through one of the open sores, but that they by themselves weren't the cause. This is something anyone can get, diabetes or otherwise. I'm no doctor, but I'd say that until he started having the severe flu like symptoms he hadn't caught the infection. I just feel a bit sorry for him now. If he's having surgery then inevitably there will be a potentially not-insignificant healing period. With him already out of work I can only imagine that making things even harder for him.
It is fast hitting, from what I understood he was feeling sick and showing flu like symptoms. So much to the point he could barely function, and went to see the doctor and treated it like it was the flu. Knowing his other issues, the doctor should have realized it could have been MRSA from the severity of the symptoms he had. I feel bad for the guy too, and being out of work probably will make things harder for him.
First, get well Dayton. I don't want to be worrying about anyone but my mom right now. Second, don't blame the doctor; in all probability it was refusal to be treated more than doctor not catching it. And third, there is a recipe from the early ages that has been found to at least as good as modern antibiotics with no side effects.
I don't ordinarily participate in these kinds of threads, and I wouldn't now but for a misclick. That said, I hope for a full and quick recovery by Dayton. This kind of situation is no joke. Get better!
I see it as akin to feudin' rural families. We fight like hell, but deep down we have a grudging respect for each other because "they can't be that bad if they're tough enough to fight with us".
I've got zero respect for Dayton, but i still dont wish him any illwill. Hopefully he gets better soon and makes a full recovery. Must be quite a terrifying thing to go through.
