UNHCR report: More displaced now than after WWII

    By Euan McKirdy, CNN
    Updated 0933 GMT (1733 HKT) June 20, 2016

(CNN) - The U.N.'s refugee agency reports that the number of displaced people is at its highest ever -- surpassing even post-World War II numbers, when the world was struggling to come to terms with the most devastating event in history.

The total at the end of 2015 reached 65.3 million -- or one out of every 113 people on Earth, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The number represents a 5.8 million increase on the year before.

A little under 1% of the earth's population is either "an asylum-seeker, internally displaced or a refugee" according to the UNHCR report, which was released Monday.

The report offers three main reasons for the increase in the rate of forced displacements:
Long-term situations, such as the conflict in Afghanistan that cause large refugee outflows, are lasting longer; "dramatic new or reignited situations" such as the conflicts in Syria and South Sudan are occurring with a greater frequency; and "the rate at which solutions are being found for refugees and internally displaced people has been on a falling trend since the end of the Cold War."

The report was released on World Refugee Day, which is observed by the agency annually to commemorate "the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees.

This year, the UNHCR is urging people to sign a "#WithRefugees" petition, to be delivered to the U.N. headquarters in New York head of September's General Assembly, asking governments to ensure every refugee child gets an education, that every refugee family has "somewhere safe to live," and to ensure "every refugee can work or learn new skills to make a positive contribution to their community."

Here are five takeaways from the report: [TL;DR]

Global displaced population bigger than the UK's
The global population of forcibly displaced people today is larger than the entire population of the United Kingdom.
If they were a country, the forcibly displaced would be the 21st largest in the world.

Over half of all refugees come from Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia
A total of 54% of all refugees come from just three countries.
Syria has the highest number of externally displaced people, with 4.9 million fleeing outside the country's borders. Afghanistan has 2.7 million and Somalia 1.1 million.

    Almost 100,000 unaccompanied children
A staggering 98,400 asylum applications were filed to the UNHCR by unaccompanied or separated children -- mainly Afghans, Eritreans, Syrians and Somalis.

    200,000 refugees returned; 100,000 resettled
Just over 200,000 refugees returned home in 2015 -- most to Afghanistan, Somalia and the Central African Republic. By contrast, 107,100 were resettled in other countries -- with the U.S. taking in the highest number: 66,500.

Turkey is the top host of refugees
Turkey hosts 2.5 million externally displaced people. Followed by Pakistan (1.6 million), Lebanon (1.1 million), Iran (979,000) and Ethiopia (736,000). It is the second year in a row that Turkey hosted the largest number of refugees worldwide.

But, but, but, they're all welfare migrants. International migration expert @Dinner told us so!

It's obvious that generous welfare payments in Belgium that are causing this. We must 1) stop any welfare payments to brown or swarthy types, 2) close the borders, 3) shoot anyone and everyone on sight. That'll fix it.

So we should just let anyone and everyone in?

No. Who has made the argument we should young man? No me.

I believe I am challenging the assertion from Herr Dinner that all migrants are shifty benefit seekers....and given I know substantially more about immigration than he does, I know how ridiculous his claims are.

I think Obama and Hillary are making the argument not only that we should let everyone in, but that we must let everyone in. They're virtue signalling as the ship goes down.

You jest but a huge proportion of asylum claims really are just economic migrants not actual displaced persons. They have a safe place but little economic opportunity so they decide to try to game the system and lie about their status. If you make it easy for people to keep gaming the system and, yes, you end up with a never ending flow which gets ever larger. It is the third world equivalent of winning the lottery.

You want to decrease these flows and actually get people to start rebuilding their lives at home? Make it a hell of a lot harder to win the lotto and give them more assistance back in their own countries. Make it clear that we know most claims are fake and that liars will never get their lotto check, that illegal will be dealt with harshly, but that assistance will be given if they actually do the long hard work of rebuilding the societies their animal culture has decimated (think Somalia which is a shithole because of the Somalis).

Do that and you will see the numbers go down, don't and you will see the flood just get ever bigger until they eventually destroy the west as well. Most of east Asia knows this and that is why they have excellent policies in place.

One of the new factors is that smart phones make it trivial for wannabe migrants to chat with successful migrants on what tricks to use to get in and what to expect. The other major factor is that smart phones make it trivial for a migrant in Sweden to talk to their cousins in Hell Hole Pakistan and tell them how much better Oslo is than Waziristan.

I wonder if your plan for the unemployed involves threats of starvation and a rousing speech about bootstraps? (That's a rhetorical question by the way).

I have a much better idea: let's stop invading and bombing countries and destabilising whole regions; let's stop propping up dictators and looking the other way so that we can continue to sell them weapons; let's take responsibility for the mess we have created, and not dehumanise millions of people due to the actions of a few.

92% isn't a few, you stupid twat. When you have 92% of the population of a country like Saudi Arabia saying ISIS is Islamic and follows Islamic teachings then you have a systematic problem with Islam itself. So stop lying and pretending otherwise.

Your number implies that 8% of Saudi Arabia is either Filipino or Indian Hindu.

Do you really not understand the difference between views and actions? You have many unpleasant views, but you haven't acted on them, besides posting on the internet (I hope).

In any case, we had this debate before, remember? You claimed that X number of Muslims supported terrorism, and I asked how many people in the west supported wars against and bombing of Muslim countries. You didn't have an answer to that.
