There is nothing wrong with making new superheroes and not concentrating on the old ones.

But it would be nice if they made these new heroes stand on their own. This girl shouldn't be wearing Iron Man armor. She, being super smart, should have made her own suit and power cell.

Yeah but War Machine isn't wearing Iron Man's suit. True, he's wearing a suit made by Tony Stark but it isn't the actual Iron Man suit.

And he's not calling himself Iron Man either.

First she needs a haircut. How is she going to get that helmet on with all that hair?

Second Iron Man? I like what one person said in the article you quoted: Iron Maiden.

"Riri Williams first appeared was in a subplot that started months ago inInvincible Iron Man #6. Her initial scenes showed work well underway on a prototype suit of armor, cobbled together from components she “borrowed” from the MIT campus."

I was arguing about FemThor, which is precisely as you described.

Regardless, getting back to Iron Man...

If that was the case, then why isn't she getting her own comic, with Tony as a special guest? Is the Marvel Universe not able to make more room for new heroes that span the full spectrum of human physical and mental diversity, to "better reflect the world as it currently is" as SJW's like to say? Let Tony be Iron Man, and Riri become a new hero in the Marvel universe in her own right?

Rather than dance around the elephant in the middle of the room for half a dozen posts, let's just cut right to it: SJW's see superheroes as too white, whiteness is bad, adding new diverse superheroes doesn't fulfill their crusader mentality, ergo superheroes must be cleansed of white-male-ness.

So instead of black/hispanic characters standing on their own merit, we'll just assume they're gonna fail (because of some anonymous group of eeeevil white men or something), and thus it's justified to take the white characters away and swap them out with black/hispanic replacements.

The Crusader mentality at work, ladies and gentlemen.

FemThor isn't actually the same character though is it? I don't read comics but if I recall correctly, I read that the female version is actually a different person taking up the mantel after the original THor gave it up for whatever reason, not to different from the whole Black Captain America thing and the hispanic Spiderman? I could be wrong.

As for Iron Man, well they can't really call it that if "Man" is a she. This, to me, is no different from Superman retiring and Supergirl filling in for him. I don't see the complaint. It's not like a direct gender swap like a female James Bond or Doctor Who. Tony Stark is still there.

Okay, here's a question for you. While I do agree that entirely new, strong minority characters are a great thing and should probably be a priority over stunts like this....this is till a partially new character. Are you saying that minority characters should be entirely banned from putting on an existing superhero costume?

    Not minority characters.

    EVERYONE.

Only one person can ever be Iron Man. That's Tony Stark.

Anyone can replace him by wearing the suit but no one can ever be Iron Man. The suit doesn't make you Iron Man if you put it on. Only Tony Stark makes Iron Man Iron Man.

It's the same with Captain America. Only one person can ever be called Captain America: Steve Rogers. Wearing the suit means nothing. It's the person in it who counts.

Bullshit. If you have the intelligence and the skill, why can't you be Iron Man? Hell, Dick Grayson was Batman for a while wasn't he?

Now, if it's Spiderman, Superman or the Flash I might agree with you since they all have powers that can't be picked up by someone else. But Tony Stark doesn't stop being Tony Stark because he loans his armour to someone else. Also, why can't this new girl be every bit as dynamic as Tony himself? Your argument seems to be "she'sa young black girl, therefore she can't possibly be as deep a character as Tony".

Sorry, I'm calling bull on this. They aren't killing off Tony Stark...and I wouldn't wind betting that with the ridiculous nature of comics he'll end up in the suits along side her, which means all your nerd tears will be in vain.

They had different story reasons, but regardless the presence of the old character somewhere doesn't diminish the overt political agenda behind the transition in the first place.

It's the agenda behind the swap which is the most repugnant. The social justice types at Marvel decided there weren't enough mainstream minority superheroes, so they started to muck with the established properties instead of making a new one with the desired traits.

Why does it have to be an "agenda"?

Don't get me wrong. I'm no lover of overt, shock value gimmicks. But I don't see this as that since they aren't doing away with Tony Stark. If it were an agenda, wouldn't they be getting rid of him and just entirely gender swapping Stark?

I see this as essentially Tony Stark's Robin. Is it so offensive that she's a black female? Is every move of this kind just to upset overgrown 40 year old kids? I'm not convinced. Are comics just to appeal to white boys? Reminds me of Whoopi Goldberg's often told story of how she got into Hollywood off the back of seeing Uhura onscreen. Who is to say that this isn't designed to broaden deomgraphics? After all, more and more women are involved in geek culture these days. Are women only allowed to enjoy male characters?

You can put on the Iron Man, Batman, Superman (assuming you had powers like him), or any other suit BUT you will never be those people. You can even claim to be those people but you aren't them. You will never be them. You have your own life, your own mannerisms and thoughts. Dick Grayson can call himself Batman all he wants but he can never be like Bruce Wayne.

And no that's not my argument you cock-gurgling retarded Brit. I don't care she puts on a power suit. But she can never be Iron Man. Tony Stark is Iron Man. Only Tony Stark.

So why waste time calling her Iron Man? Let her be her own character even if she's wearing the Iron Man suit. Call her something else.

Kuranes must have been outraged when Barry Allen became the Flash.

Or when Wally West became the Flash.

Or when Hal Jordan became Green Lantern.

Or when Guy Gardner became Green Lantern.

Or when Kyle Rayner became Green Lantern.

Or when Jason Todd became Robin.

Or when Tim Drake became Robin.

Or when Damien Wayne became Robin.

Or when a daughter of Zeus became Wonder Woman.

Funny, I don't recall Kuranes and his MRA buddies complaining then... I wonder what's different? :borg:

Do we know she's called Iron Man? For all we know the comic is called Iron Man because it's still about Tony Stark, but she goes by something else.

That is some Dinner level of reading comprehension right there.

No, I don't expect minority characters to fail. I do expect established companies will milk their cash cows long and hard and take as few risks as possible with lesser known characters of any race/gender. The entertainment industry is creatively bankrupt, as the slew of sequels, prequels, and reboots have proven.

Look, I'm a realist. I think people want new stories, but will the companies bank on it? Probably not.

    Sorry, I missed this one.

Not at all. If the writers can create a black/hispanic/whatever character that has a good backstory and is relatable, and has a compelling reason behind taking up the existing mantle, then I don't see an issue.

Let's just say I'm reading the tea leaves.

Riri Williams exists to be a black Tony Stark. All we know about her is she's a black child prodigy at MIT, with an intellect that's supposed to be Stark's intellect plus one notch. She has no backstory, nothing that fleshes her out as a human being. What separates her from Tony at this point, except for an afro and a vagina? Yet we're all supposed to pump our fist in the air and high-five each other that she's taking over for Stark, solely on her race and gender. Yay for diversity! We're not racist!
