I have several relatives who were born in the 20th Century who will still use the term. None of whom, however, were born after 1960.
Some use it as a term of endearment. Same way black folk sometimes use 'whitey' instead of a derogatory term. It wasn't meant in a negative context.
You don't understand why this is not true? Clearly you are oblivious to it's historical use as a racist slur, dating black to the days when black people were oppressed and marginalised far more than today, and that the users of the racist slur were the privileged white majority. Also, it is false to suggest that all black people condone its use within their own community.
My dad, a white guy, grew up playing with black kids in the fifties. His best friends were black. He's still good friends with them. Between them it is endearment, a guy thing of ragging on each other. But my dad wouldn't use it outside of that context. I can see a kid not understanding that and thinking people used it as an edearmeant. I mean my brothers and I didn't think that, but some might.
Jesus fuck, what is it with white people liKe you and your obsession with using racial slurs? I've never once met a black guy that gets pissed at not big able to call Asians gooks or Hispanics wetbacks and beaners.
Context does matter, yes. Some white guys use the N word with their black friends, but it's usually with black friends they knew since they were both in diapers, and even then not in mixed company. But it' astonishing that TLS has no idea of darkie being primarily an insult in 2016.
True, but most of the black people I knew back in the day in Queensbridge used "Chink" and "Spic". You need to get out more.
I live in California, where I had a woman once tell me I shouldn't complaint about political correctness going to far. But the thing is, are black people crying online about how unfair it is that they can't use racial slurs anymore? I've never heard blacks cry about white people calling each other crackers or whitey.
