Good example, there. It's a low profile horror movie (I watched it on Amazon Prime) with an interesting premise. Spoiler alert! Alright. Rant over. It's an example of the kind of sloppiness that pretty much kills modern horror movies. 2/10 because the picture is in color and in focus.
"The Witch" was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. It is not a traditional "horror" movie, but depends on atmosphere rather than "jump thrills". It's spooky, eerie, and down-right disturbing. It is extremely authentic in every way imaginable. including 17th century dialect, which can be difficult to follow, especially if English isn't ones native tongue. In a nutshell; excellent film. Highly recommended.
Yes, it was terribly authentic considering dirt does not seem to stick to the pretty people. The movie was not a jump scare movie, but just because it did not rely on cheapo scares does not mean it was good. There is nothing new in it. The only decent actor is the father.
I have no problem with jump scares IF they are well done. Why not. They're a trope too. Why are those things tropes? Because they work and people like them. Best example from recent memory: IT FOLLOWS. That's how you do it. Jump scares suck when they are 'foreshadowed' 30 seconds in advance. Yes. Sure, go into the small room with the creepy washing machine/dark basement/lonely room with heavy door/abandoned house at night. Linger. Nothing will ever happen
