No, no, I'm talking about the campaign portion leading up to the actual election.

Yeah, seems like British elections last about six weeks. Is there just a lot of preliminary stuff not widely reported over here? Or are the campaigns really that short and efficient? Our started more than a year ago. It's disgusting.

Possibly, but in ours folk are actually voting for their constituency rep, rather than for the PM, who is simply the head of the majority party or coalition. In the US, the House/Senate majorities are formed by separate votes to the Presidency, so you have a bit more choice - in theory - to vote for a progressive President but a conservative executive to, for example, lead on social reform but be fiscally responsible.

Now before the howls of laughter begin (I know, Republican fiscal responsibility!) I'm pointing to a theoretical ideal scenario. Ours hands the Prime Minister slot to someone who already has the majority vote in Parliament (assuming they can rein in their MPs). This gave the current Parliament to the Tories even though 64% of the electorate voted for other parties (just not unified behind one)... I'd still feel better with Proportional Representation.

Everyone had the chance to select someone else. Why didn't that happen?

The other choices were even worse. Seriously, Cruz?

Everything "unlikable" about Clinton falls into three categories: trivial, fictional, or related to her vagina. She's an extremely qualified candidate with a strong, sensible center-left platform.

Conversely, everything wrong with Donald Trump is plain as day. Yet his supporters are so disaffected with the establishment and/or bigoted that they don't care.

Canada's last election was one of the longest in our history- 78 days!!!!

I guess the fact that party leaders are already established and (are generally serving as) members of parliament expedites things.

Do you two honestly think that nobody thinks about the electability of a party before a general election is officially announced? We've been talking about it already, ever since the last general election.

The only thing quick is the technical process, and that's only because the head of our executive does not have a separate election. To pretend as if the politicking doesn't start until Parliament sets an election date is silly.

Technical process is what I meant. Obviously political calculation and maneuvering are continuous. You seem to always assume ignorance. In the US, official mechanics of the election are more than a year long.

Yes, but consider the sheer size of the US, both geographically and demographically. The UK is smaller than some of our states.

Trump won because there ARE a lot of idiots who like the sound of a wall around Texas. He appealed to the ignorant and the obnoxious. Also it didn't help that Paul Ryan pounced on the emails like a lifer on conjugal day at San Quentin. Now it looks like she's playing the FDR card.

FDR wasn't raking in personal money from Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo. Hillary was paid tens of millions of dollars by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Russians, Chinese, Algerians, etc.

That sounds more like a wall intended to stop Texans getting into the rest of the US. If he'd sold it like that, he'd probably have a double-digit lead by now.

Check the polling on worries about unchecked illegal immigration. Obama has let the border get completely out of control, with millions coming in with no checks at all, including Middle Eastern terrorists. Other Republican candidates danced around the issue, or argued obscure points about who did what and why on earlier legislation (Rubio and Cruz). Trump said "build a wall!"

Obama created Trump by forcing liberals to choose the form of their destructor.
