Although TK has in reality been effectively dead for a few years already. I figure it'll be interesting to track where the mostly former members have found new homes in. Here's a few hangout boards that come to mind.

    http://www.lonaf.com/forum/portal.php
Dead. It was the hangout for the Minefielders. Not sure where they're slumming it these days.

    http://spin-flippery.com/forum
Ilyanna's board. Had a few Badlands posters on it such as Jibbles and Riot Gear.

    http://www.shatteredcorpse.com/sc/forum
The TK ExIslers hangout. Seems to have fallen on hard times like every other BBS out there.

No. I don't use it since I'm one of those tinfoil hat types that doesn't believe The Facebook needs to hand over my tracking data to the ever growing list of security agencies.

    Fair enough.

FB is frigging creepy. I once tapped on Google Maps to check out the name of this beautiful cathedral along the 805 once....turns out it's a Jewish temple. And now I get "suggested posts" from local synagogues to attend Shabbat about once every other month. I made a purchase of some liberal hippie non dairy frozen dessert at my locals Sprouts and the next day I get ads for other brands of a similar product. I looked up OB/GYN stuff ( and no I'm not pregnant, nor trying to be :P ) and now I get ads for period trackers. :soma:

Stores are doing this, too. A father of a teenage girl discovered his daughter was pregnant after the girl bought prenatal pills and magnesium with her debit card and Target sent her a bunch of coupons for baby stuff to her house :soma:

The short version of all of that is, it's not you being paranoid. FB and Google are 69ing each other to get our info and track us.

If you want to, you can see (and edit) what interests Facebook assigns to you. Go to "Settings," then "Ads," then "Ads based on my preferences."

Some of mine are things I actually am interested in, some aren't but I can see how they ended up there, some don't make any sense for me, and some are "how is this even an option?"

For example, mine include "California State Senate," "salamander," "Hooliganism," "compressed natural gas," "Moscow mule," and "đồng phục."

It also thinks I'm interested in saline (as in saline solution), and I suspect it's because I like some pages of businesses in a town called Saline.

It's not just Facebook. I find TripAdvisor to be particularly annoying. The other day I checked out a hotel that I used to go to as a kid to see if it still existed. Since then I'm bombarded with emails telling me that the hotel that I supposedly want to be booked is available and I should rush to make my reservation. I just looked at the bloody place out of curiosity!! I hate all this "intelligent" marketing. It's bloody thought control.

Effective thought control, of course, happens wherever you haven't noticed it.

Now there's a thought to keep me up at night.

Yes, our Wordforge thought control module is very effective in that regard.

Fuck. Every ad on my browser is either Hugo boss suits or Kwikset dead bolts this last week. You can see what I was shopping for all over the web apparently.

If someone had too much time on their hands it'd be interesting to see TBBS's progeny laid out family tree like.

It'd be sadder than a redneck's family tree in some cases.

The incestousness of TrekBBS posters, especially those who migrated to other boards, is actually sort of kinky.

Hugo Boss just makes me think of this guy who tried to sell me a security system. E left script often, telling me among other things about how is parents took him to Hugo Boos and hooked him up. I've never been able to take that line seriously since that day.

That would be incredibly sad and a complete waste of time. Of course I'll tack something together and seek some more input to fill in the blanks.

The thing about the TREKBBS spinoffs is: TK was the only one NOT to devolve into a private community. Even WF has that vibe.

TK, on the other hand, constantly sought new members... mainly due to MM. Had she not done it, the loss of the original crew would have killed that board years ago.

FB can be even creepier. I had a barely used account which I deleted in 2012 or so (please, please, come back, we haven't deleted anything yadda yadda until it stopped). Then I didn't have an account for years. I made another one last year because it's the only way I can manage a few work related things.

It has no connection to my old account whatsoever.
It's made with an unrelated throwaway mail address.
It's only accessed from an IP address I didn't access FB from back then (... because I had a different job with a different one...)
I'm using a cat profile picture.
    Fake name, needless to say.

I did click on a few actual interests so they won't delete it because of inactivity.
I uploaded a few actual pictures of flowers and stuff for the same reason.

Needless to say, a few days later the friend suggestions became spot on about 80 per cent people I actually know. :borg:
Also needless to say that I have hosts-blocked everything FB-related on my home computers now. Fuck off, Facebook. Really.

That much is true. Initially we thought it would be cool to hang in the realm of real life, the folly of which became very clear. Facebook is real life. It's a sad reminder as to why most of us left home in the first place. You can't really post with anyone-you're rubbing noses with their real life family. Suddenly you feel life you're peeking in someone's window. It's like, here's your mom, grandma, the kids from school, THE TROLLS! The best you can do there is "like". Welcome to Random Land! The realm of prayers and amen. My graduating class must have done a shit load of drugs back in the eighties. Then there's the , I-know-you-don't-read-my-posts-pity-party. I once, said I know no one can read my posts. Just cut and smear this shit on your wall. It may be the best thing you could ever write. They're praying for me. I told them it was okay. I already prayed for Rosemary's baby. Thank God I never went back home!

My mom is still trying to get me back home with the "save your money and we can all live comfortably" bit. Mind you, my mom has only now (partially through no fault of her own) gotten the first regular employment she's had since the Bush administration, my brother has had exactly three jobs and less than two years' work experience and they want to rent a house if and when the divorce from my stepdad goes through. Moving in with them would be far more expensive than staying here on my own and having only my bills to pay.

Oh yeah, and I'm also 30, so there's that. :garamet:

If you wipe your tracking cookies that will go away. I always love starting a new computer and seeing how certain adds pop up, and what it thinks you want. It does eventually figure out I do not need ads for tampons.

That is what I am saying. It would remove the rare odd search info so it does not get put in the advertisement algorithm.
