My dad advocated plenty of wars. But thanks to a year along the 38th parallel after he was drafted, he is allowed to have those views and even have them considered respectable.

At least his views were formed through experience.

I suspect his father has much to be respected. I also suspect that he wasn't a supportive father. I think Dayton looks up to him, and tried to match him, because he feels compelled to for whatever reason. Something I can associate with to a certain degree. I was obsessed with outdoing my father for many years.

I've also seen situations, though, where the youngest child in a family was a boy and because of that the parents treated him like a prince and showered more attention on him than the older sisters. Those boys grew up to be a lot like Dayton, with an overinflated sense of their own worth.

My youngest sister, four years older than me always complained that our parents ignored her. One of the other thing is mom and dad were immensely happier with my choice of spouse than those of my sisters.

A few explanations

"Dierks" is my home town.

40th Infantry Division was my dad's unit in the Korean War.

Charlie Brown was the name of the Church of Christ preacher who baptized both me and my youngest sister in 1982.

Henderson State University was where I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree. Same as my mother, all three of my sisters, two of my best friends, and Amy attended there for several years.

Officer David Shelton was the senior officer of Dierks's two man police force whose quick thinking probably saved several lives one ice cold night in town back in the 1990s and he never received any recognition for it.
