You know, I read that novel and several of the sequels, and I got more and more confused. Watching the one mini series (the one with Patrick Stewart) made it even MORE confusing. I hope whoever has the task of writing the script does the novel justice, but makes it less confusing for me.
Movies based on video games are passe. And it will be hard to top The Rock. Wait, what? "Dune"? Never mind.
Patrick Stewart was in the cinematic film, not the mini-series. The mini-series was done by SciFi in the early '00s and was actually really quite good, I thought.
Eh... Maybe a better as in a closer adaptation of the source material, but I don't know if I'd call it better in terms of quality.
The David Lynch Dune really is a bad movie, but it's an interesting, watchable bad movie. It certainly doesn't lack for a clear, stylistic vision or for memorable performances or for iconic moments. It might be the worst movie I actually like. I watched the first half of the Sci-Fi series and found it pretty boring. Don't think I ever finished it.
Totally agree the Lynch version is so terribly bad. But at the same time time extremely enjoyable to watch. Each of the characters is so overplayed, the editing is bad, the lines so over emphasized, but still fun to watch. I tried to watch the Sci-Fi version and found myself very bored, I think I got through maybe half an hour of the first episode. The Lynch version, I can watch over and over.
Sci-Fi's "Children of Dune" is worth watching separate from its "Dune". But what they really need to revisit is Jodorowky's Dune.
Some questions on re-using all the tons of work that went into Jodorowsky's Dune, assuming someone went that route. 1) Lynch pretty well established that you can't make Dune in one movie or you have to leave so much out that there's not much point to it. But is there any good break point where Dune could be split up into actual movies (as opposed to episodes in a short mini-series)? 2) Much of the work that went into J's Dune got re-used for tons of other iconic Hollywood movies, such as Alien, Bladerunner, etc. If a Dune movie tried to reclaim these elements would the audience view it as call backs to "prior" sci-fi movies, thinking it's a derivative mash-up of other ideas? 3) Can't we find something a little less ponderous and dated for a movie? I would think something like "A Fire Upon the Deep" would allow for even crazier imagery but with a much more straightforward yet mind-blowing story.
The easiest break would be the Sardaukar invasion, with the Duke captured an Paul and Jessica fleeing into the desert. I'd have to think harder to make it a trilogy.
Hrm... It might be easier to go with a different book. *googles* 21 best space opera books 1. Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge. 2. A Talent for War - Jack McDevitt 3. Falling Free - LM Bujold 4. Let's go all in. Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers by Harry Harrison Lensman by EE "Doc" Smith Berzerkers by Fred Saberhagen
I loved the Lensman series so much! That, John Carter, and William Smiths Venus Equilateral stories were my childhood companions.
Pissed me off that they stopped just short of "God Emperor Of Dune", which is where it really gets good. They should do what they're doing with the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", series reboot, jump ahead to four, then backtrack with prequels.
