http://jezebel.com/wonder-woman-will-no-longer-be-empowering-young-girls-f-1790052775 Fuckin' morons, slut shaming a fictional character. "She can't be a symbol of female empowerment because she's not covering her body in shame!"
Actually, in the petition opposing WW, the rationale is thus: "Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots –the epitome of a “pin-up” girl." WW has always been a large-breasted white woman of impossible proportions, not just her "current" iteration. And I suppose if you're the UN looking for a symbol of female empowerment that will speak to all nationalities, a women in American flag armor might have a limited appeal. Maybe the Burka Avenger would have been better? And actually, I can kinda see their point that maybe choosing a fictional character trivializes the intent behind the initiative.
They've appointed several fictional characters over the years. They appointed a fucking Angry Bird this year.
Oh, geez, I thought it would be from fundie Muzzies, but it sounds like it came from a white privileged pseudo-liberal position. Whelp, Wonder Woman has had to put up with this bullshit since her inception. They can write this right back into her story, and it fits right in.
Fucking UN - I'm not surprised. They are so fucking pacified, dhimmified and terrified of course they are "triggered" by any character that's this chock full o' WIN! Fuck them, their loss. So why the fuck are we even part of that mickey mouse outfit anyway?
Duck fucking is probably a big part of the culture in about half the countries in the UN. That said there's probably at least a few people with the name Duk Phuk Ging as members.
What do they mean with the 'current iteration'? The recent comic series that go out of their way to use her personal strength as a vehicle to discuss gender issues? Or the movies that have an actual human being portray the 'impossible proportions'?
It clear that people should aspire to more mediocre ideals, that are closer within reach. [Like Obama.] Wonder Woman sets the bar too high for little girls around the world.
I get this a bit. She is fighting evil in a bathing suit. Take another fictional female hero Sarah Connor. Sarah grows from being a waitress to being the mother of the human resistance. Does she go out there and fight the terminator in armor bikini? No she gets all militarized up and is powerful and inspiring. Is wonder woman like superman in that her skin is it's own armor? I do not know if that is the case, but if her skin is like human skin she should have some sort of armor on. Also wonder woman's outfit is clearly binding in the middle like a corsett or playbook bunny outfit. For all the people who have not worn that sort of thing it may seem like armor but it restricts movement, airflow, and makes your organs more likely to rupture if you take a shot in the abdomen. I could get something like spandex without armor for a flexible female warrior who uses dexterity and athletics to hit more vulnerable spots with less force. In those cases form fitting and flexible works into the fantasy fighting style. Wonder woman is in a bathing suit. The only male characters you see fighting in open skin are characters like the hulk. Even superman and Thor are not fighting bareback. Batgirl can be sexy while still not fighting in a skimpy swimsuit. Cat woman had clothing covering her arms, legs and chest. Wolverine wears closer thing and his body regenerates. It even seems somewhat wasteful for him to wear a shirt considering how he fights. I am not going to say sexy should not be there, and I get the fun and empowerment of being sexy. But put something into the characters powers or style that does not make it so stupid. I liked wonder woman's entrance into bat man vs superman. I thought it was heroic and awesome when she came in, and she was tough and strong. But she was in a bathing suit. Fire and shrapnel is flying through the air and she has her skin bare. I get why the un would look towards a more conservative hero.
It is more like because no one should fight intergalactic evil doers in a strapless one piece unless one of their main weapons is boobie missile, and even mahoromatic wore more clothing than that.
Yes. She's also been wearing a lot more lately. The bikini shape is still there, but over other clothing, much like Supes has always worn his underwear on the outside.
Ok, then it makes more sense for her to wear something she feels more powerful in. I would at least like the writers to explain it. If you don't explain it then it is fanservice. I do not mind fanservice, but when you are the un you might chose something more conservative.
1. As I understand it, the outfit Wonder Woman wears is at least partially ceremonial. 2. Her skin is not bulletproof, but her reflexes are so good that she can deflect bullets with her metal wristbands. 3. True empowerment means a woman can wear whatever the fuck she likes without getting shamed for it, which is something the UN doesn't seem to understand. That morons are condemning her for not being more covered is exactly why an ambassador like her is needed.
Yes, Wonder Woman is so fast she can deflect bullets. I saw that when it was on TV in the 70's. So why not just shoot her with a short-barreled 12 gauge using 00 buckshot which would create a pattern bigger than she could cover with her wristbands? Or you could have have two guys shoot full auto at different parts of her body, such as one guy take out her legs while the other guy sprays a burst from her head down to her belly. Even as a kid I figured that out in about five seconds.
Since the bullets are bouncing off her bracelets and she's extremely smart, I'm pretty sure in a situation like that she wouldn't waste time trying to deflect bullets and just kill her attackers instead. (Wonder Woman doesn't have a lame no-kill rule like Superman or Batman.)
