There have been some attempts to erode it most recently by Cameron but to portray it as in decline for 30-40 years is incorrect. Under Blair, spending on the NHS increased dramatically.

I stand corrected. However, Blair did start down the slippery slope of privatization, which is inexcusable and ultimately ruinous.

Thatcher actually made a good point once when she observed that the sheer scale of technological advance in modern medicine makes it way more expensive than it used to be. If you don't have all those high-cost gizmos (which simply didn't exist before), you don't have a top-rate service.
And that costs big bucks. The days of a stethoscope and a few other tools are longgggg gone.

When I was at university, circa 1980, I took a course on third-world development and heard the following story about how not to do things. The Swedish International Development Agency (change of name since) actually built a modern hospital in Dar es Salaam, in very poor Tanzania. Spanking new with all the bells and whistles.
Only problem: running it gobbled 80% of Tanzania's national health-care budget. Not much left over for basic health care in the rest of the country.

Yep, you can't just come in and drop down a first world level solution if the country in question can't operate it on a sustainable basis after it is built.
