Should we assume it's because of his Middle Eastern-sounding name?

Normally, I might agree. I've certainly witnessed cops being assholes. In this case, though, a police officer who was bothering no one was detained by DHS, without any stated reason. He has a last name that sounds foreign, and not just foreign, but those people foreign. I do like that he got to experience what's going on for thousands of people every day, people who have never broken the law in their lives. This dog and pony show needs to end. It isn't creating an environment of security, and it's clawing at the rights of a free people. So maybe some good can come of this.

    This.

I don't know if he's a good cop or a bad cop, but hopefully this will give him a little perspective when dealing with people in his job.

    Hence, the laughter...
While he may not have been jacking someone unnecessarily that particular day, to presume he's never done so in a police career is to argue against water being wet.

The guy's name was on the terrorism watch list, he was from Somalia, and he was coming back from Somalia. Yeah, those are damn good reasons to question him. It turned out a known terrorist was using his name as an alias.
