Every now and then, you come across a story presented by a source you'd normally consider credible, that's just so jaw dropping amazing that you have trouble believing it is true. This is just such a story.
    Here's the video

That was shot at night. I don't know what to make of it. Is it a fake? Is it real? I don't know, but if it's real, holy shit does this open up huge possibilities.

    I believe it.
I remember a general on some tech show saying we'd have color night vision in 10 years over 10 years ago.
    It's right on time.

Not the level of color I was expecting, however. Nor the visual range.

I've used conventional video cameras that, with the gain settings turned all the way up, could make a scene look almost that bright. In color.

The real difference here is how there's so little graininess in the images from this new device. It's a far cry from anything I've ever seen before.

The one the general described was going to be a hybrid of FLIR and thermograph to get all the wavelength channels, but this one is a normal light camera with super sensitivity.
BUT what he described as the end result was like this.

I would be believing if the range of the camera was a few hundred meters or so. The fact that it makes an entire desert look like broad daylight just blows my fucking mind.

What would really be useful for the military would be if they could combine this imagery with some sort of thermal overlay. Seeing in darkness is great, but thermal imaging is how targets are detected and engaged, even in broad daylight.

I believe that's real. Look at the city lights in the distance and the stars in the sky. You wouldn't get either of those effects if you were shooting in the daytime.

    Want.

You NEED to be wearing a night vision visor with the abilities of this camera to drive on the roads up in Cape Cod at night in the Summer. You CANNOT see a THING on those roads once the Sun is gone. It's extremely dangerous.

No, but you could add them in using a lot of readily available software.

Yeah, no shit. This has the potential of being huge for all kinds of uses.

I totally see this technology being used by big game poachers (deer, elk, etc) shooting game illegally during nighttime hours and predator hunters (coyote, fox, cougar) shooting game legally with this technology.
