Weak skit, but I would love to see the fourth movie go back in time, and change the timeline back to TOS, and Pine become Shatner-Kirk. Then Kelvin timeline really would be a prequel.
Haven't watched SNL in many, many, many years. It wasn't funny back then, it sure seems like it isn't funny now. Occasionally, they'll get a gold nugget that will go viral, but I'm hardly going to tune in every week hoping for that rare occurrence.
Reminds me why we stopped watching in the 80s (or whever the Mike Meyers/Billy Crystal/Julia-Louis Dreyfuss age ended). We got the first 3 seasons on DVD when they came out, and enjoyed the nostalgia. But we noticed it starting to get unfunny in season 3 (coughbillmurraycough). My wife suggested we stop wasting money on it if we weren't enjoying it.
I did like the parody of the crap they started in the 70's with the character's having their signature "tag line".
Well excuuuuuuse me! (Caught Steve Martin on an old Muppet show a few weeks ago. I forgot how annoying THAT bit was.)
"Shitty actor inserted into classic show/movie" is recurring concept SNL can't stop using, along with game shows. I suspect they really wanted to get Pine to play Shatner, but Pine wouldn't go along with anything too "edgy." It's not like they're completely incapable of writing funny sci-fi sketches. I also appreciated the subtle dig at Treks other desperate attempt at ratings...
Remember back to 2009, when it seemed like Trek was going to be relevant again? Two forgettable sequels later, and Trek is teetering on the edge of an abyss. Completely overshadowed by other movie franchises....no TV presence for almost 15 years, fans having to make due with TNG era reruns. If Discovery sucks, Trek may be dead forever
To be honest of all the Trek skits on comedy shows to me the best is still the first one. SNLs famous "Cancellation Skit" with Belushi, Ackroyd, and Chase. Chase as Spock was particularly good. The only one that rivals it in my opinion is "In Living Color"s "Wrath of Farrakhan" skit with Jim Carrey as Kirk.
I still like Shatner's,"get a life" skit. ETA: Futurama has done better at parodies of Trek than anyone else.
. Oh I agree with the "get a life" skit. But it wasn't really a Star Trek skit the way I consider it. It was Shatner playing Shatner mocking Star Trek fans.
They did a pretty good Star Trek:TNG/Love Boat mashup when Patrick Stewart was the host 20 years ago. Chris Farley as Riker, Rob Schneider as Data, and Tim Meadows as Geordi!
