I've been watching a number of video clips about Star Trek: Discovery and much is mentioned about the "divided fan base"?

Is Star Trek's fan base really that divided? It seems to me there really is not a significant contingent of fans wanting to see more of Voyager or Enterprise so that takes 11 seasons of Star Trek off the board right now.

From what I can see there are really only two main divisions among Star Trek fans.

    1) Those who would prefer new Star Trek set in the prime universe (mostly post Nemesis)

    2) Those who think the Abramsverse is fine and dandy and couldn't care less about the prime universe. Note Discovery is it terms out apparently an "Abramsverse" Star Trek.

But even this divide is not as huge as it seems. From what I've heard most of those who think the Abramsverse is the greatest thing since...well, anything would be just fine with returning to some post Nemesis Star Trek in the prime universe.

How could you unite the fan base solidly behind a Star Trek production and keep it united for a sustained length of time?

    By making a great show.

Some people were against TNG, some were against setting a show on a space station. What wins people over, thank God, is quality.

DSC is set in the prime verse, it's been stated several times. From what I've seen, most people are tired of prequels and want a post Nemesis show.

They claimed that when production started but I've seen numerous video clips on YouTube that make the argument it is in fact in the Abramsverse. From legal reasons to the uniform features being similar.

What would you consider "real news"? Now I know what I consider "real news" but I don't recall an article about Star Trek: Discovery in "The Economist".

I would prefer it if the show was part of the Abramsverse actually.

It annoys me that they want to tie it to the Primeverse but then turn around and shit all over the continuity.

I know it shouldn't matter, but to me it does. One thing I've always enjoyed about Trek was how everything was (mostly) internally consistent and connected at least till DS9 ended.

Voyager was never that good but the last few seasons were even worse than the early seasons. After they dropped Kes from the show it basically became the Seven of Nine show guest starring crazy Janeway and annoying Holodoc.

The only way to unify trek fans is to knock them out and stitch their naked bodies into a human quilt.

Trying to unify them behind a show? Not going to happen.

The fandom has been splintering since TMP - a return to TV shows just made it worse.

All they can do is try and provide a decent, engaging show and fuck pandering to the fans, or rather which subset is doing its best impression of a teething baby at that time.

Eh, Trek has never been brilliant at consistency. TOS managed to be surprisingly good at it though.

The fact TOS managed to be pretty consistent was a mix of luck and the writers. We got about three different timeframes before the 23rd century was settled, one script - not sure if the line made it to screen - placed the series in the 26th century.

Then we've about 5 General Orders that are the only death penalty. Maybe Starfleet have a Death Penalty roulette wheel, where once a month the various Admirals get mortalled on Saurian Brandy, spin the wheel and send out a memo to everyone which infraction earns a spacing this month.

We've got about 5 different years for First Contact with the Klingon's over the various series'

One of the biggest bugbears of STID was nuKhans magic blood capable of healing anything. Of course we tend to forget TOS gave us magic flowers that did the same thing (and were never referenced again! Much as Khan's suddenly magic blood won't be)

And of course the biggest one has been the Klingons appearance, which is doubly amusing given the panjandrums over Discovery.

TOS, they looked like early users of fake tan, by TMP they were given the ridged foreheads, something that continued to evolve over the years.

However, no one in TOS went "those be Klingons? The hell? What the Sam Hill happened to their foreheads?" - this is because they were always 'meant' to look like that, it was only when DS9 decided to chuck in a *wink, wink* moment, which was about at close as Trek will ever get to breaking the 4th wall, that a hammer was taken to that.

Now the Klingon's got an Augment arc, which was kept schtum, and all of Starfleet pinky promised never to mention the different foreheads again, probably at the Annual Klingon-Federation Band Camp on Organia.

I don't remember the 5 death penalty offenses. All I remember is the Talos IV one. That I never understood why was a death penalty offense.

In regards to the 26th century? Are you referring to "The Squire of Gothos" ? IIRC Trelane refers to a pair of dueling pistols which he mentions as being identical to the ones that killed Alexander Hamilton and says something to the effect of it being "700 years ago"

Talos was General Order 7, and in Turnabout Intruder General Order 4 is mentioned. I'm expecting others to have appeared - TOS was never meant to be internally consistent, so you get lots of little issues as no one was bothered with the minutiae. Took a while for them to settle on Starfleet for example, we also had UESPA and a couple of other names too.

No, it's Spock describing the time difference between then and the 20th century, so it'll have been one of either the time travelling eps, or one of the plots that had parallels to the current time.

I figured the "General Order 4 mistake" in Turnabout Intruder was just an "excited utterance error" by Chekov which seems reasonable as he and Sulu were babbling almost incoherently.

Lots of people are vague on expressions of time.

How many people refer to the American Civil War as "hundreds of years ago" which directly indicates at least 200 years when it hasn't been 200 yet.

Funny. Personally I don't like teaching about the American Civil War in regards to the battles and stuff as that is something a fair number of students have already heard about extensively anyway.

I'm more interested in the causes and aftermath.

Given you're teaching history the wrong way around it's more like aftermath, then causes :borg:

    *ducks*

Anywaaaaay... I don't care about fandom. Never have. I just want to be blown away by the new show. There are plenty of shining examples out there so Trek doesn't have to break new ground this time. Just watch the best, take the best parts, make cool show.
