Garrison Keillor is out. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo...ropriate-behavior-minnesota-public-radio-says
Based on the description I read, this seems like a pretty harmless accident with no improper intent. We need to evaluate each accusation on its own merits, and not get caught up in a feeding frenzy.
I get the impression some employers and businesses might be using this trend as an excuse to dump people that have overstayed their welcome.
That might be it, but I’m more inclined to put it down to cowardice. Employers are gun-shy and starting to overreact.
https://apnews.com/a471efc6700f406c9d8ac2e5037cfe9b Some details. It sounds like MPR took longer investigating this than NBC did, at least.
No, it’s a complete joke, and I’ve lost the (considerable) respect I once had for MPR. We’ve gone from getting rid of serial predators, to getting rid of anybody who accidently touches a woman’s skin in a non-sexual manner? The harrassment train is officially off the rails.
Vice President Mike Pence's policy of avoiding being alone with a woman unrelated to him is looking better and better.
Except, like a lot of these guys, he's got a rep. With him being fired, I'm not sure how much will come out, but it wasn't just this incident.
I know of people who've dealt with him and have described him as making them "uncomfortable," he's screwed over a lot of people when it comes to them getting credit on his show (he didn't write as much as most people think) and has said to have been a petty tyrant to work with. He fits the profile.
Meanwhile, wife abuser Johnny Depp gets to be in the new Harry Potter series, Mel Gibson is the middle of his comeback with Neighbors 2, and Bill Clinton is still more beloved than Hillary. :/
Uncomfortable in the creepy sexual way. As for the other stuff sounding "standard," so is sexual assault, it seems. If you don't respect a person enough to not rape them, how can you respect them enough to make sure they get the credit they deserve?
Every staff writer on a comedy show thinks they deserve more credit. Everybody thinks their boss is a petty tyrant. That doesn’t make him a rapist. If there are credible accusations of specific wrongdoing, by all means people should face the consequences of that. If we’ve reached the point where lives are getting ruined by whispers and innuendo, well, the Thermidorian reaction can’t be far off.
For many years writers on PHC, when Keillor was there got no credit. None. Zero, zip, nada. Even on episodes where the bulk of the material was produced by someone other than Keillor. Actually, I've had a number of decent bosses who were a pleasure to work for. No, but it doesn't preclude him from committing sexual harassment. Have we reached that point? Certainly, it is coming, I expect the number of allegations to explode in the run-up to the 2018 elections. I'm not convinced that the allegations against Kellior are at all untrue, or that MPR has overreacted. Harry Shearer has had an ax to grind against Keillor for some time now. Why? I don't know, but given his work for NPR, I'm certain that if he knows anything about Keillor, he'll be mentioning it soon.
Quick, name three of David Letterman’s joke writers. It’s always kind of been the lot of such people to toil in anonymity while the star gets all the credit. The entertainment industry is unique: highly stressful, demanding, full of outsized personalities and massive egos. Every successful producer or showrunner is going to have at least a little bit of tyrant in them. The key is being able to let it out when needed, while keeping it under control the rest of the time. Obviously, I don’t know the specifics of Keillor’s behavior, or how any of this applies to him. I’m actually kind of hoping more stuff comes out, because what I’ve heard so far seems awfully flimsy.
Sure, when you can name a book that Letterman produced under his name that contained no content written by himself. The writers for Letterman were listed in the credits of the show. Keillor often denied having writers, Letterman didn't. But good talent always acknowledged that they had good writers. And yet, various actors and directors have been praised for their professionalism and kindness. It can be done, but people don't always want to. It could very well be that they're doing what Spacey did and trying to fold before worse things come out.
