I try to very carefully to look into an issue as best as I can before I comment on it. Normally, I've mostly gotten either insults (or worse) or completely ignored and never any serious responses to what I've said, or posted.
The Republican campaign against education is ramping up in Michigan: Michigan judge rules kids don't have a fundamental right to literacy A Michigan judge ruled last week that children do not have a fundamental right to learn how to read and write. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Public Counsel, the nation’s largest public interest law firm, on behalf of Detroit students that sought to hold state authorities, including Gov. Rick Snyder (R), accountable for what plaintiffs alleged were systemic failures depriving children of their right to literacy, according to the Detroit Free Press. U.S. District Judge Stephen Murphy III acknowledged the importance of literacy in his ruling on Friday in a 40-page opinion. "Plainly, literacy — and the opportunity to obtain it — is of incalculable importance," Murphy wrote. "As plaintiffs point out, voting, participating meaningfully in civic life, and accessing justice require some measure of literacy." But he concluded that those points "do not necessarily make access to literacy a fundamental right,” adding that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the past that the importance of service "does not determine whether it must be regarded as fundamental."
D'j'yall know that private schools are practically nonexistent in Finland, and yet they have some the best educational success on the planet? Yeah, how 'bout dat shit.
Wait, freaking Martok is running for Congress and I just now heard about it? The only thing better would be if Robert O'Reilly ran, got elected, and did Gowron's crazy-loon-eyes thing on CSPAN every day.
So it works for a country with a population smaller than Minnesota or Colorado? An ethnically homogeneous population that's barely grown. And if I'm not confusing it with another Skandi country, aren't more than 7 in 10 of Finns members of the Lutheran church? [And they must have already killed off most of their poor too, apparently only 1 in 20 is below their poverty line.] Lots of ideals could be put into practice in such a tiny laboratory with such static conditions.
You can tel by the neg reps who’s interested in actual debate vs talking points. They don’t want to talk about nuance.
These arguments about the country's size and homogeneity come up a lot, not just for education, but for healthcare and other proposed government services. And I'm forever missing the logical connection about why they matter.
It's like claiming that because a football play works well for your Pop Warner (Pee Wee) football team that it will work well for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The children's team can execute a play but the professionals cannot? Finland is juvenile and Americans are adult experts? No, I'm afraid this is a terrible analogy.
You mean like a trick play on a reverse when the quarterback slips past the defense for an easy touchdown catch on a pass from the tight end?
That has been around for literally decades at the pro level. I remember QB Danny White of Dallas catching a touchdown on that same play in 1983.
It wasn't my purpose to persuade anyone about this topic of e.g. successfully transplanting what it is to be "French" to French Indochina, or turning a Hong Kong into a Little Britain. Instead gave reasons why, imo, US will never be like Norway. But if you removed all whites, blacks and Hispanics from the US, leaving only Native US and Asians, our reported data would differ in most every metric: e.g. education, crime, abortions, or health care. Or -at opposite extreme of scale- consider my sister, former wall st. wife of a former-trader, divorced, then continued to piss money away like a liberal (spend far more each month than she could ever hope to bring in). Not until after years of reform, during which she learned to stop wasting money on extravagances, was I prepared to subsidize her spending. When I saw that she was no longer wasteful, I began sending checks. Socialism easily can work effectively on the smallest, nuclear family, scale. A long while back Dicky said here that he missed chance for a job because he lacked a car, at which point I briefly considered sending an anonymous check to fix that problem - then reconsidered since I'd have no assurances he'd buy the car or even whether it would fix his issues.
Is it too late to point out that neither Koch nor DeVos have given these people any money since 2010?
What was DeVos doing in 2010? Promulgating religious schools in Michigan that eliminated those nasty subjects like evolution. Just a warmup for her determination to dole out vouchers to parents who don't need them and create a financial, if not racial, segregation.
It's not surprising that you do not understand what socialism is, and that you label the act of supporting a family member as such.
Yup. And @Tuttle has basically admitted it: We can't have strong government services because of brown people. Yes, you include whites in this comment to save face, but we know how you're thinking.
Thought it was obvious I used those Asian examples because closer to home for you. Your hypothetical works just as well as the Asian-only one to make the point you solicited, but you revealed your bias - you should be embarrassed for both yourself and your family for both the shoddy mind-reading and disguised bigotry.
