Looks like his daughters are going to be film directors when they grow up! Maybe they can deliver us a Trek movie/series worth watching....
Well, garamet, if you couldn't tell that this was a tribute thread, then you really needed to get that cup of coffee in you first before you started to make snide remarks so that you could have a "lively discussion" We do have tribute threads here in RR - lots of them. Most of them are to say things about someone who has died. This one happened to be about someone who is still alive.
^So now you're going to go back through the thread and lecture everyone else who didn't pay proper respect, IYO. Then you're going to go through Ramen's tribute thread and scold people for not being serious, yes? Or are you just going to do a - more polite of course; anyone is - Uncle Albert on me? While you're here, perhaps you can indicate where I was in any way disrespectful to Mr. Autrey or denigrating of his heroism. That I presumed to take the conversation in an unexpected direction may have ruffled your feathers, but that's the beginning and end of it.
Sounds like what some people did in a thread called "Every Man's Death Diminishes Me" once upon a time
Again, did I say anything disrespectful about Mr. Autrey? Also, is the "Any Man" thread in the Red Room? If you can answer "yes" to either of those questions, then your point will have validity on one level. The subtext, of course, is that any attack on me for anything I post is really not about the subject at hand or what I post about it, but about the fact that some people do not wish to be reminded that their fellows are dying in Iraq while the worst part of their day is the morning commute. Seems like we're overdue for another Help Desk thread in which I ask if people want the Memorial thread discontinued or not. Then we can have 16 pages of rants about how I'm using it "to further my political agenda," and the moderate voices will chime in and tell me to continue it. Guess we need one of those every few months to take the pressure off. Edited to add: It was Elwood's decision to cut the offensive posts out of the "Any Man" thread. Maybe the RR mods can cut my posts out of this thread.
I don't recall any disrespectfulness towards the troops in that thread. I do recall people feeling the thread exploited them to make a political statement. Sounds like the kind of opinion the Red Room is famous for not anymore Did he just up and do that or was it in response to a request?
Precisely. Because it became a target for JohnM and BlackDove, among other shit-smearing specialists.
Still waiting for you to show me where I've said anything disrespectful about Mr. Autrey. You can't. You're just going to drag this out with your cryptic one-liners. Which of course are not doing precisely what you're accusing me of doing...
I never accused you of that. You felt the need to make that self-observation on your own. I simply recall a difference in your role from there and here. There you were defender of thread integrity, and here you are the champion of free speech
Show me how so. I see a thread of yours that enjoys protected status, either by rule or by tradition. And then there's that current thread, burdened with tangent.
All I did was start the thread. No fanfare, no statement of political intent, no statement of any kind. The shit-flingers came in and started their thing. I simply kept posting the names and bios of the casualties. One of the RR mods - I don't remember who right now - started pulling the shit-smears out and creating separate threads. Those threads went on and on and on and on about How Dare She?!!! and the shit-flingers kept smearing the Memorial thread because, they argued, it was their inalienable right to smear shit in "my" thread as well as "their" threads. Finally Elwood intervened after one of the server changes, which is why his name is at the start of the current thread, and announced in yet another separate thread that only the names and bios of the dead could appear in *that one thread*, and that anything else would be deleted. Which is how it's stood ever since. And in the minds of some it's still "unfair." Even though they can say whatever they want anywhere else they want, and Wordforge is neither a democracy nor anything to which any of us are entitled except through the indulgence of those who own and run it. Elwood's argument, IIRC, was that whatever they thought of me, they had plenty of other places to say it. Posting it in the Memorial thread was disrespectful to the troops, not to me. Which, of course, the shit-smearers refused to acknowledge. Rinse, repeat. That's the history of it as I recall it. Probably not 100% accurate, but maybe someone else can provide more background. Again I'll say, if a mod wants to pull all of my posts out of this thread, I wish they'd do so, just to get you off your soapbox. I *will* ask that if you're intent on carrying this forward, you start a separate thread. Meanwhile, you may have the last word in this one.
[Duel of the fates chorus] Cooolaaaaa!! Mataaaaa!!!! Coooolaaaa!! Mataaaaa!!! Miso!! Piso!! Chuba!! Wamba!!
Well, as long as the thread was in the RR, it was susceptible to all that. Such is the room's nature. I'm not on a soapbox, I'm just making observations. But then you somehow twisted this observation... ...into a self-perceived accusation never actually levelled that prompted you to say... so it seems you have an inherent sensitivity to certain observations.
I gotta say I honestly don't know that I'd do this. If it'd been me, the guy would probably have been fucked. And if I did jump down there, we'd probably both be dead because I don't think I'd have had the brass balls to try to pass under the train. I'd have probably gotten squashed trying to wrestle him up onto the platform. (And, as I mentioned, actually I'd have probably found myself, walking away, rationalizing "I'd have jumped down there, but I had to keep an eye on my daughters" instead.) Kudos to Mr. Autrey, and I hope he takes any money and accolades anyone decides to give him. Where's Chewie, anyway? If anyone deserves the Badass Motherfucker Award, it's this guy.
One thought I had about his deed was his familiarity with the system, evidently enough to have it in the back of his mind. He had advantages most wouldn't who didn't use the subways there. Being in the construction industry, there would almost have to be an interest in the details from my experences in the field and being mechanically inclined.
Yeah, guess who's displaying their "ugliness" by saying they are surprised that nobody gives a fuck about the race of the hero - other than her of course, which surprises NOBODY to be honest. All politics aside (as well it should be in this case) that dude is awesome!
Okay, this is an old thread but (A) @Sokar was a "he" and (B) he's dead. I guess you've forgotten that he and @Ramen and a few others would have "noticed" that before anything else. Try to keep up.
So now you know what dead people would have said? Please remember to use your psychic superpowers for good, not evil.
No, I'm telling you what he DID post. Try to keep up. Or are you playing the "if you call a racist a racist that means YOU'RE a racist" card? That's soooo John Castle.
