Much improved over S1, Mount is great and Burnham feels a lot better when she's not angsting. Reno is interesting and her smile when the first transport went off was heartwarming - it's good after S1 to just see Starfleet officers grinning over pulling off rescues and exploring stuff, y'know?

I loved the fortune cookie foreshadowing for Pike, but missed the nod at the beginning as I just figured it was a way to remind the crew that Tilly is smart... getting the Enterprise to communicate in Morse i.e. only able to talk in a series of beeps. :(

Well, there's a similarity to the Iconians as presented in Star Trek Online, but that's set in 2410. Kinda hoping it ain't them (and we'd need some time travel or other shenanigans to explain why they are virtually legend by Picard's era if so).

Anyhoo, Netflix's tagline for S2 says:

    • Thank You! Thank You! x 1

I’ll be honest... although I enjoyed the first season, I found them not to have a lot of rewatch value. I’ve expressed my concerns with the continuity errors and the Klingons and all of that still remains, IMHO... but this was a really good episode!

I assume there are already 89 youtube videos explaining why the Red Angels are obviously (insert name of mysterious powerful alien race here)?

Iconians seems to be the leading theory.

Whatever they turn out to be, I betting they either inhabit or use the mycelial network, leading to the eventual need to avoid spore drive and why no-one has it as of TNG. The fact that the spores went crazy when in the vicinity of the asteroid and the weird dark matter it's made up of seem to be hinting at this.

Technically speaking that doesn't have to happen.

This is a new Star Trek and no matter how many times they say they aren't doing it they are going to reboot TOS eventually.

    That's what Airiam is.

Although, Pike being in the beeping wheelchair could be due to his brain stem being too radioactively goo-ified to hook cybernetics to anymore.

Well damn. This episode made Star Trek fun, it had humor, suspense, and even a touch of wonder. I really enjoyed this episode.

Star Trek Discovery is so indescribably great!

Yeah. That's two episodes in a row that worked really well. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Not as of yet, no. But then, I have not seen the new episode.

    That's good to hear.

This is was way better, had a TOS vibe to it. I disagree that the Prime Directive applies, they're human and were taken from Earth. So I'm guessing these red angel beings save civilizations that are collapsing for some reason?

Yeah, I really can't stand that she's the focal point. They bring the Ludite (still don't know here name) as the expert and yet how many lines did she get? She unlocked a door that anyone can unlock. At least Detmer is getting some lines, I like her a whole lot better.

    Burnham is a terrible character.

I actually want to see much more of Admiral Cornwell... the bridge crew is still just window-dressing in the first episode; though the roll-call was a nice nod to the one of the criticism us viewers have.

Dito on taken from Earth, but the species doesn't really help. Most of the civilizations to which Kirk applied (and then violated) the Prime Directive were physically human (parallel development, remember?).

Burnham is starting to grow on me. I like her pragmatic approach to things. I like how she’s begun to stick up for the Discovery crew this year and she’s got a rebellious tendency that she’s working hard to keep in check when she knows that she has the answer to a problem and is waiting for her Captain to catch up. That’s what got her court-marshaled.

I was hoping Owosekun, the bridge officer whose name I just learned this episode, would’ve gotten some more lines. It might be a lost cause with any of them except for Detmer.

Anyways... great episode. This show is really starting to come into its own.

Well, it wasn't until the third season that TNG really hit its stride, so . . .

Meh. Maybe I'll start watching this again.
