It makes his incarceration more meaningful. Each and every day he is in there (which will be for the rest of his life) is a day he is imprisoned because he is still deemed to deserve it, not because the system declared him inhuman half a century before then forgot about him.

Why do you equate solitary confinement with torturing people?

I'll sweeten the deal. Given inmates a choice between lifetime solitary confinement or the death penalty. Of course by being given this choice they have to agree to forego any future appeals.

Should save money

Solitary confinement for life would be drive anyone insane and would probably lead them to kill themself or worse.

Most people would chose the death penalty, so not a really a choice.

By all accounts, it drives people crazier than they already were.

Your problem is, not that you'll listen to me, is that you think you've got it all figured out. That you're right about everything, and that if people would just listen to you, everything would be okay. That's not the case, though. That's not the case with anyone. While all of us have figured out some things, we don't have it all figured out. If we're smart, we recognize that and we listen to people who tell us we're wrong, because we know that they just might be right about it. But not you. No, you think you're the only sane person in a world gone mad, and so you don't listen to people when they point out something you've said or done is wrong. Because you don't think that they know what they're talking about. How could they? If they were smart, you tell yourself, they would agree with you.

The reality, however, is quite different. But you'll never know this because you're unwilling to entertain for a second the perspective of anyone else.
