About Data...can you have an Uncanny Valley situation with a live actor?

You just wanted to say askew because Kevin Smith hasn't made a movie lately.

It's a shame they're de-aging Spiner at all. They actually solved this back in the second space crystal episode, when they said that Soong had installed an aging routine into his androids. They just forgot that they solved it, apparently!

Yeah... but if you're dreaming about a dead person, they usually don't look older than they did when they died.

That's a very good point! I'm still assuming that most of the conversations with the Soong android aren't dreams. If they are, then yes, Data should look young again.

I've watched the trailer a few more times and I was actually talking to a friend of mine last night who's a Star Trek fan and who's seen every episode of every series except DSC. That's significant because other than my step brother, who lives about 700 miles away, he's the only person I know IRL that is a fan. Anyway, we sat down and talked Trek and the Picard trailer. Three story lines seem to be going on here. "Unification", "Measure of a Man" and "Descent" "Unification"is unresolved. Spock is gone, Romulus is gone and Picard is the only one left that can resolve that story line. As for "Measure of a Man", perhaps Starfleet got desperate and started building androids and is using them in a way that Guinan warned against and that's where Picard broke with Starfleet. Then there's the destruction of the Borg which most definitely had repercussions that spanned the galaxy. Throw in Hugh and Seven and now I can see where all of this fits. Having said all of that, I think it's brilliant. "Unification" has always been a story I thought should have been resolved and I was hoping they would do it in the TNG movies, but they didn't. If, and this is a big if, they pull this off, I will love them for it. If they don't, then fuck Kurtzman.

TL;DR version, after re-watching the trailers and doing some digging, I think I know where they are going with all of this and if they pull it off, it's brilliant. So I'm more exited than I initially was.

You could, in theory, read the end of VOY as such, with the collapse of the transwarp network. But most people assume that was only a temporary setback/local effect.

I thought they were alluding to the series of novels that indicated the Borg were the combination of the crew of an Enterprise era starship and a mysterious immensely powerful alien race. IIRC at the end of those novels the Borg invaded the Alpha and Beta Quadrants en masse and the alien race that helped create them agreed to basically "reassimilate" the Borg.

Yeah I agree (and I hated them which of course means nothing). Which is why I was surprise to hear the "Borg being destroyed" referenced.

I always assumed Endgame was the final nail in the coffin for the Borg.

I can't see one of Star Treks best villains being killed off in the last episode of a much despised series.

You might as well kill off the Klingons in the final episode of Enterprise. I would be the same thing.

why not just say that data had his face re-sculpted to look older? Just going through the natural human process. Mention he might change his face at some point if he feels the need to (hire another actor for the character). Other than that, the de-aging isn't there, but it's not enough to take me out of the scene.

Well, yeah, but if - as we strongly suspect - Data's only there in Picard's mind, then Picard would see him as he was when he died.

Anyhoo, some other comments from the con suggest that the Romulan storyline will partially cover the issues of immigration and asylum seekers in the wake of Romulus' destruction (waves to Dinner). Narek will be trying to uncover some secrets to save lives, but Elnor won't be his best bud just because they're both Romulan:

So, Narek is a "typical" Romulan and Elrond Elnor is one of Spock's "boy scout" reunificationists.

I'm going with the dream theory, Picard is wearing the rank of Captain and the uniform from 20 years earlier.

There is no warp speed either. But it makes sense to talk and think about both in reference to Trek stories.

    FTL travel is theoretically possible.

"Canon" is the reason why you can't have a rational conversation with a lot of fanboys.

Trek has alternate timelines baked into its mythology.
Just pile on more timelines, and all the splintered canons are gobbled up like Pac-Man.
    No dots left over.
    Easy-peasy.

Apparently the Picard countdown comic doesn’t jive with the 2009 Countdown. So Kurtzman can’t even keep up with his own continuity. Of course we already knew that from watching Discovery, but it doesn’t bode well for this series.
