Ensign Watson, as I understand it, was the duty officer at NASC (Naval Aviation Schools Command) that morning. The perp walked right in the front door, right up to the duty desk, and just opened up on him. Wouldn't surprise me if one of the other sailors was also manning the duty desk; in most spots like this there is usually one junior officer and one enlisted sailor standing duty as a team.

    Damn shame.

Gun free zones do not work as well as a gun free country. For instance the UK has much less problems with this sort of thing because the areas where security is high are not surrounded with guns. I can agree that there may be a point of complacency that may come and allow person who has gotten through all the other gun restrictions in the UK and some areas may rely too heavily on the gun ban to provide their security, but it does lower the amount of attempts overall, and therefor lowers the number of successes.

Statistically, if you can drop the number of attempts on the screen as drastically as a gun ban would do, then overall you also drop the number of breaches that happen. The potentially rise of incidents because of a weaker screen does not match the larger number of breaches due to the screen being overwhelmed with attempts.

This is the overall statistical weakness of the more guns means safer fallacy.

But until your entire country is "gun free" your particular "gun free" enclave will be a soft target. Even if 100 percent all the vehicles & people were searched entering the gates of a military base, bad guys would circumvent the gates and enter illegally. This depends on the base, of course. Here on Fort Gordon (a very typical army base) we have a thirty mile perimeter, much of the perimeter running through wooded areas. The fence is broken or missing completely in quite a few spots. So sneaking onto the base isn't exactly rocket science.

Well, Twitter's being fucking stupid about this.

Should have banned the nutter before he shot up the base.

This just in (okay three hours ago but still) the base located the missing Saudi student pilots! All the Saudis attending the school are sequestered into one area now for the time being.
Now the big question involves the shooter's fellow Saudi students filming the actual shooting: did they happen to be there and started filming the action just like any other people would if they came across such a crazy scene? Or were they prepositioned to film it because they were in cahoots? :chris:

I understand things take time, but that is not a reason to toss the baby out with the bathwater and not move on to a better system. If we go by your logic why would we even have cars that run on unleaded gasoline since there would be time where we would have to phase out the cars that did not run on the new gas. Your idea is that we should not do anything because it doesn't solve all the problems. However, we see that it has amazing results that we will accomplish when we are done doing so.

My thought is not to do a full gun ban, but rather a huge overhaul on who gets to own guns and make it a group that one has to apply for, be trained, vetted, and approved for, and maintain good standing and be inspected and watched by the authorities like any upstanding person who works with dangerous materials and restricted information. If you keep a level head and don't have incidents with the police, and if you do not take drugs, and if you do not care for children or the insane in your home, and you have the proper training and safety at your residence to own a gun and keep it secure then I am for you being able to do it. I am even up for hunting and recreational use just because we are a land of freedoms. However, we should not be dumbshits. Just because there are abilities to own a gun does not mean we should let any stupid dumbass have one.

Maybe it would be an impetus to be a little more in control if in order to play with guns you had to not be over at the local bar being a drunk ass fool. If you are prone to drinking and being out of control you should not have a gun in your possession or at your home. If you are so obnoxious that you have had to have the police deal with your loud fucking drama and the fallout from your interractions with other people, then you should not have a gun. There are tons of people who never have to deal with a cop because of an altercation, and you should keep yourself that way if you want to own a gun. That may mean you better not date crazy women who are going to call the fucking cops on you.

I am also a person who realizes things change so there should be a process to immediately take away a person's gun license, and also a process to restore it or recognize a person has made a change over time and give back a gun license.

I am up for all of those reasonable things and giving that a try to see how it works when done well. However, the guntards who make crazy arguments, and that is not all gun owners, are probably not going to be of the proper ability to own a firearm. I would never give @Forbin a gun. Dude is a walking accident waiting to happen and should not have a gun for his own good and the safety of those around him. As much as I may not be a fan of your or someone like paladin I would imagine you would be able to complete a licensing process and get a weapon.

 you just contradicted the living fuck out of yourself dumb ass! You just laid out your opinion on who should and shouldn't be allowed to have guns, then offer up Forbin as an example of who shouldn't have one! Let's diagnose your epic dumbfuckery shall we? Forbin:

    1) has an active security clearance. This is something your convicted felon drug addict ass will never get in a million years BTW. Forbin is as vetted as vetted can get!
    2) doesn't drink - not a drop!
    3) married to the same woman for decades - so much for dating crazy women!

Damn Tererunt you just got your ass handed to you by yourself! You lost your own argument in about 45 seconds - that's gotta be a new wordforge record!
You win the coveted "Golden Shinebox" award! Now go play in traffic or something and leave the adult's table. Don't go away mad, just go away as they say.

Forbin is a paranoid coward who sees enemies everywhere and is more likely to shoot someone he knows by accident than someone who is trying to harm him. His sort would be weeded out through the training and vetting process as beibg far too unstable to own a firearm. He is the guy who plays too much with his gun so you have to take it away from him before he accidentally shoots someone. Maybe he is better IRL and just lets his insanity out here, but he is cowardly and way to twitchy to be safe with a weapon.

@oldfella1962 I will give you that forbin might be on the line and that would be why the process for approval should be discussed by a few people who have interacted with the owner. So the argument could be made by him with people who know him better than me that he is safe and capable. I will admit I could be wrong and my method would certainly have better contact with applicants than their actions on wordforge.

The things I miss by having Terrorbuns on ignore... well, show why I have hi/er on ignore.
Dudette, I haven't even had a chance, or even the urge, to go to the range and shoot for almost 10 years. My guns are hanging out in their safe, sad and lonely. I even sold a few off to a local gun store last year. It's been, let's see, 42 years since I bought my first one. Nobody's dead yet (well, a few woodchucks). Go figure. The shooting and collecting aspect is a hobby, and my interest in hobbies sometimes waxes and wanes. I've been waned on the shooting and collecting for quite a while. My concern in my right to defend myself and my home, however, has never faltered.

what you missed by having T-run on ignore? Clueless nonsensical ranting basically. Apparently she possesses such sound character judgement that she is an authority on who should and should not be allowed to own guns. I shot her argument down (no pun intended) but she is too bag-o-hammers dumb to realize it. Thankfully she is no position to affect government legislation in any way, or make any decisions over & above which drug dealer or horny trucker to patronize.

Cultural differences? Call me old fashioned but nicknames and military training (hell military life) go together like milk & cookies. Everyone here on wordforge who served in any capacity will back me up on this, or they are a lying motherfucker.
Granted these days it's toned down considerably, obviously. Some of the more memorable ones from my career:

    Beaker
    Ricochet Rabbit
    Stymie
    Grape Ape
    Bubbles
    Portawop
    Gooseneck/onion head

Be funny, in a way, if that's actually what the shooting was about.

But I doubt it. Looks like a repeat of Fort Hood. One of the articles I read indicated he specifically targeted American servicemen and that some of his fellow Saudis were actually recording it on their smart phones.

oh no you DI-INT mention Fort Hood! :brood: The army totally & utterly dropped the ball there. People saw this tragedy coming and nothing was done.
Let me preach on it: Hasan had stated and demonstrated anti-American sentiments and mentally unstable, violent leanings on one more than one occasion.
His fellow officers were very concerned and played the "if you see something, say something" game to no avail. :( Their superiors would not address their concerns because they were afraid of damaging their careers! Hasan was a muslim (no kidding?) and thus a minority. Any NCO or officer who has a "does not support Equal Opportunity" on their annual rating might as well find a new career. Hasan throws down the race/religion/ethnicity card - whether it has anything to do with it or not - and his superiors might be accused or investigated for not supporting diversity, tolerance, cultural consideration, etc.

So everybody walked on eggshells/whistled past the graveyard/ignored the elephant in the room.....until it was too late.
Of course the army's official CYA story was "we were totally blindsided!" but soon Hasan's fellow officers opened up about trying to warn their superior officers and getting shut down. :brood:

Every year I do a program for the naval Aviation Electronic Warfare Symposium for one of our Business Development guys. The emails between him and his buddies getting the info together are great - no one uses real names, just call signs. The guy coordinating it is "Kilo" (an old A-6 WSO). Other notable officers uinvolved were "Rasta," "Ronbo," "Vito," "Gump," "Steamer," "Abu," "Nash," "Gramps," "JDub," "Dizzy," "Weed" and "Load." There were a few more that were clearly sexual references, or references to fuckups they had, but I can't find them in my notes, dammit.
Since I did the artwork and put it together, I have been honorarily dubbed "Fingers."

porn stash was a good nickname given the picture. I guess sometimes you have to take a bullet for the joke? Every so often you are going to get a twitchy kid and shit happens when you are being a dickhead. Just find out if foreign agents were sticking things in his butt so we can shake our fingers at them and pretend it is all their fault so we can bomb some more brown people.

Fucking CNN! Damn those motherfuckers are dumb...as...fuck! Check out this bit from an article about the shooting investigation:

"Alshamrani and a small group of Saudi nationals traveled to New York City over the Thanksgiving holiday, a law enforcement official told CNN. They visited several museums and Rockefeller Center, the source said, but authorities don't know why they traveled to the city."

Bitch you just fucking said they went to a museum and to Rockefeller Center literally in the preceding sentence!
