I don't know, it seems reasonable to start to humanize your enemies 75 years or so after defeating them.

I'm completely baffled that they would show that guys picture to start with. Maybe later on when they discuss the massacre of American prisoners at Malmedy you show him but not to start with.

Interestingly enough that bastard survived WWII, a death sentence, and died in 1976 when he was murdered by having his house set on fire in France.

Okay, it's a crappy version of the clip, but if you're in the US Army and you're talking about the Battle of the Bulge then I'd think that this would be the first thing that sprang to mind:

Not some goddamned German son-of-a-bitch who didn't have the good luck to die in battle when he should have.

In which case, you look for a rather generic way to commemorate the day. You know, how like the US celebrates the Fourth of July as Independence Day, and doesn't hammer away at figures like Col. William Tavington.

You can humanize the Germans, you do not humanize a genocidal Nazi. Unless, of course, you're the kind of person who thinks that there were "good people on both sides." To quote a particular President with whom we both vehemently disagree on almost everything.

What happens when you romanticize horrible people in war: See confederate symbols in the US.

No good comes from making these horrible people look heroic.

I guess I'm not seeing where it's praising him. It seems more along the lines of - "this thing happened, and this is the asshole in charge of it" to me. Am I missing something?

oh I agree with what you are saying - but context matters, and there's a time and a place for everything. This would not be one of those times and places. Thus the message of "humanize your enemies" (if this was the intended message) falls flatter than a pancake, disrespects those who sacrificed on both sides, and makes the army look clueless & foolish - and trust me they don't need any help in that regard.

opening with the guy is not a good idea. With today's shortened attention spans you might want to stack the deck with the "bottom line up front" which is BTW part of the army's official doctrine for good communication.

Pretty sure the intention was not to make him out to be good people. They could have handled it better, obviously. But only portraying Nazis as faceless monsters or as caricatures glosses over the fact that it isn't just inherently evil people who are capable of succumbing to an evil ideology.

So fifty years later here is the new BOTB and America is getting rag dolled and Walmart is apparently the command center in this fight.
The technical term for what is pictured is "Dunlap Disease" in which case your belly "dunlapped over your belt". :(

One has to remember the thing about Nazis. There were those who believed in the cause, and those who were just surviving. My great grandfather refused to join the party as a executive at daimler benz. He was lucky to have his wealth and status taken away and be sent to live in the country with family scraping by as they were forced to give to the war movement like other poor residents. He could have found himself imprisoned or killed like others who stood up against them. You did not really get a chance to stand up and say no to the nazis as a german.

It was a bad choice for an article to glorify an enemy like that, but the reality was you did not really have much of a choice to support them. If you were sent to war you really don't have much choice but to fight even if you are not thrilled with fighting. I would imagine in those wars the choice to not join when conscripted was met with a lot harsher punishment than it was for americans drafted in vietnam who chose to dodge the draft.
