So I have little to no familiarity with the series except I watched an episode once and it totally broke a whole bunch of cannon so I turned it off. I figure now that it has run it's course I would give it a chance to see how bad it is. After watching the opening scene and credits I am not hopeful. OMG what is up with that song? Why do we have to make star trek rock and roll? then we go from cheezy ballad music to the normal star trek score? Did he just run into the ship while parking? However, the episode was pretty strong over all. I don't see it breaking much of the cannon and they seem to be working on lesser technology. I do like how they have dials and other types of older controls. I guess the problem with back in time star trek is there were things that were not in the experience of Gene roddenberry, and the other creators so the technology really would look a lot different. All in all that was not a bad opening.
It's not the hideous abomination the drama-queens make it out to be, but it's kinda bland. There are some standout episodes here and there. Phlox is my favorite character, and John Billingsley is the best actor in the cast (IMHO). They bend canon, but never truly break it. They DO however decimate fan-canon remorselessly, and that's what really butt-hurt the hardcore fanboys. Fanboys felt like they had ownership of the prequel era with their tech manuals, and fanfics, and then Enterprise comes along, and smashes through their little world like a fruit stand in an action movie car chase.
Wait, I'll amend that, Phlox is my fave of the regular cast, but Jeffrey Combs as Shran saves the day as much as Seven did for Voyager.
It's very bad. A total failure of imagination. I stayed with it for the first two seasons and dropped it shortly into the third. Those are the only seasons of Trek that I haven't watched and I've no inclination to go back to them. Just wait for Captain Archer's "antelope" speech.
Most nights when I don't have anything better to do I'll have a TV on H&I with Voyager and Enterprise playing in the background. I still like the latter show far more than I do the former. It's got problems, but not nearly as many as the Janeway show and, overall, I like the cast/characters better (with the exception of the guy who played Mayweather, whose acting abilities are represented here). The worst thing about both shows, though, is that each had potential to be really, really good, but failed in different ways. Voyager should've been more like nuBSG and Enterprise could've taken lessons from Vince Gilligan on how best to do a prequel.
Realistically, any of the previous Trek shows would be ratings failures. There's nothing about them that resonates with the majority of people. Whether it's the deep, philosophical introspection of TOS or the mindless but exciting technobabble of ST: Borg (née Voyager), Star Trek is just too foreign to the average person. ETA: People watched TOS, TNG, etc. because there was nothing else on.
What Diacanu said. I mean, I came into the franchise through that series and my 15 year old self connected to it in a way that TNG never did when my aunt forced me to watch as a kid. I kept on chugging along with the show well after my crush on the guy I was trying to connect with faded. But when I watch it, all the fuzzy feel-goods are mostly connected to my nostalgia, not what's on the screen. I connect season one with what was easily the best year of my school experience, period: had decent friend, no bullies and overall seemed like I was being "less angry" and less of an embarrassment to my family. After watching TNG and DS9, I can understand why existing fans were bored outta their minds at best. That said, it's probably why Season 4 for the very noticeable improvements to the writing just didn't resounate with me. It was all about connecting ENT to all things TOS (and TNG with Data's grandpappy) and no matter how hard I try, TOS just ain't for me. The only story to carry over from the Xindi arc was the T'Pucker 'ship and I didn't like it when they were called Ross and Rachel on the recently ended Friends. TLDR: don't listen to us old geezers, watch the show and make up your own mind. If you say the theme song is good, you're #cancelled
It takes way too long to find its legs and if you watched VOY before watching ENT, then the first two seasons feel a lot like reheated VOY while the third feels like over-correcting (but decent). Season 4 is really good up until the finale. Even at its worst, ENT is nowhere near as bad as STD or STP. Come back, Enterprise! All is forgiven!!!
That's a common fanboy trope and no, season 4 sucks just as much sweaty balls as the rest of the show. The only difference in season 4 is that the new producers/writers decided to stroke some of the nerd's cocks with some fan service.
I wouldn't say S4 was as bad as the rest of the show narratively, bit as someone who didn't give 2 fucks about TOS's lore, turning the whole show into a connect the dots to that part of Trek didn't do much of anything for me. I got wrapped up in the Coto-mania more because I was anti-Bermaga, but on the rare occasions I've re-watched Enterprise, I usually just stop after "Home". It's no longer about the characters I started watching for (what little development they had) and the only storyline arc that carried over from season 3 was the boring ass Ross and Rachel in Space that has not gotten better with age or distance from my own shipping preference at the time. 6/10 for effort
