Today, for the first time, I actually took a close look at a bell near the courthouse and discovered that it's the ship's bell from CVL-30. I've must've walked by it a thousand times or more, but never looked up to see the wording on it. Bells aren't exactly random around here (across the street from this one is a cathedral that's more than 200 years old with bells that ring all the time) so it wasn't something I really noticed. No idea why it's there. On the ground by it is a simple plaque from 1974, acknowledging the ship's service (and next to that, inexplicably, is a memorial plaque for submariners lost in WW2). San Jacinto was the carrier that President Bush flew from during his service, but in 1974 he wasn't particularly noteworthy.

awesome bird! But it would indeed look like it's about to fall out of the sky when it's coming in for a landing.
Came across this. Love the bow wave at full speed. Caption reads: USS Boston (CA-69) on a full power run on October 22, 1943. Official US Navy photo NH 80-G-283559, now in the collections of the National Archives. But someone said Boston didn't have aircraft, so it may be Baltimore.

NICE! So do hydrangea bloom all summer or only for a short period? I see some here and there where I live but before I pull the trigger on getting any I want to see how long they stay in bloom. Any thoughts?
Mostly about this time of year I think, at least in northern Virginia. Nice flowers and don't need a lot of attention. We just have to pull the vines off of them once in a while so they don't get choked out.
is that English Ivy encroaching on your hydrangea? It so that's an invasive species and spreads almost as fast as kudzu.
