Yes, more Star Wars, I will consume anything Star Wars at all times and will love it. *brainwashed robotic voice*

Let me guess, he comes up with a really good idea gets about halfway through filming then Kathleen Kennedy realizes the movie isn’t woke /SJW enough and isn’t sexist towards men and he’s fired.

*Waititi's movie rakes in 1.5 billion, Kennedy doesn't mess with it, like Mandalorian, and FF morphs into a cheeping cricket over this post*

Based on what we've seen out of Waititi so far, I have hopes. If Disney doesn't interfere too much, it could be epic good fun.

Aaaaaaaand you just made me think of a way that this whole lockdown business could mean we start to get some really good stuff once it's over. Not only do the creative folks have a lot of free time on their hands now (so they can work on developing their passion projects), but they're also not under huge amounts of pressure to complete whatever it is they might be working on. So not only do they have time to think about their projects, they've got time to figure out who they want to pitch them to ("Not going to give it to so-and-so, because he's an asshole who fucks with things, I'll pitch it to this person because they have good ideas.") and they can also lay huge amounts of groundwork in developing parts of the project which will make it harder for the studios to interfere in the process once things open back up as they'll be desperate to push out content. ("You know, I'd love to have JJ direct this, but Ridley's already got the whole thing storyboarded out and if we give it to JJ, it'll add at least another six months to the process. Ridley can start shooting as soon as we get the film permits.")

Enough of those types of projects make bank, and it'll force the studio system we have to change.

Yep. I thought "What We Do in the Shadows" looked stupid as hell when a friend recommended it to me because Taika Waititi. Then I laughed my dumb ass off and now I eat up a new season in a weekend.

It's Star Wars fandom. There hasn't been a project in the history of this franchise that *didn't* piss off fans...including The Empire Strikes Back, as I've recently learned.

It's a uniquely negative, pissy fandom so creators may as well do whatever the fuck they want with it IMO

Reading what he said the problem I see is what is Star Wars without the IP characters? It is just another space movie. There is a bunch of expansion on the original concept, but it never had core cannon. So you pull planets and ships out of your ass because there really is not a defined set of universe rules, and if you do not reference enough it is just a space movie. FFS Spaceballs could be Star Wars cannon. There is no attempt to reign in Star Wars tech and define it. Back in the day there were roleplaying mods to combine the Anime Slayers and Lost Universe series with Star Wars because they had a combination of light weapons that ran on psionic/magic jedi type powers.

It might work. He did make Thor cool, so we will see. By using the Star Wars IP you really have to use the referential material to put it into the fanboy argument realm. Even if you piss the fanbois off they will hate watch to argue with why it isn't actually Star Wars. Do not run away from that arguiment too far because you cut your own project's throat.

Me, too. If anything I like the fact that they're trying to break the mould (both in the casting sense and in the sense that Lucas' formula was getting mouldy).

Yes, they've fallen on their faces more than once but at least they're trying.

I'm surprised that people were pissed off by The Empire Strikes Back. I don't remember any backlash about it at the time and don't remember seeing anything since. What was the controversy over it?

A New Hope also seems well beloved, even though it's IMO overrated because its special effects and so forth were so novel for the time.

    They whined about the cliffhanger.
Thought it was a cheap ploy that tainted the ability of the film to stand on its own.
Yeah, franchises weren't like they are now.

^^^ Partly this, and partly that Empire doesn't tell a complete story. It's very obviously an episode, a "part one," and it suffers from that.
