I'm a big nonprofit nerd. I've worked in nonprofits for several years, and I've served on multiple nonprofit boards. I'm all about accountability, transparency and due diligence. But, come on -- the dude saw an immediate problem in his community and stepped up to help fix it. If I saw somebody who'd been raising money for years without getting 501(c) status or filing a 990, yeah, I'd be suspicious and I wouldn't give them anything. But that's not what's happening here. Maybe down the road, the guy will start a 501(c)(3). Or maybe he'll start researching it and realize that there's an existing 501(c)(3) that has a similar mission, and he'll start volunteering for them instead. But for now, he's just trying to do some good, and I'm happy to help. Meanwhile, even though most of us don't know each other outside of Wordforge, I've been interacting with @Ancalagon here for the last 15 years, he's pretty darn open about his offline identity, and I'm willing to trust that if he vouches for this guy, the dude's legit. And if I'm wrong, the $10 I just sent isn't going to break me.
