What @The Ghost of Crazy Horse has COMPLETEY misunderstood is the basic premise of what some of us have been trying to tell him: Don't just post a video or a link. Preface it with an introductory sentence or two, as in "This thing I'm linking you to is essentially saying what I believe, which is..."

    IOW, use your words.

    Exactly.

The link is great, it serves as an informal reference to back up, expand on, evidence or otherwise illustrate whatever point you are making.

Perhaps the issue is one of familiarity with that concept in other areas of life?

I did that in the Biden administration thread and it was dismissed and @Spaceturkey called me link boy as some sort of insult indicating that using a link is somehow wrong. I've also posted videos with my own comments, but people seem to only remember the times I didn't. Again, I'm not the only one here that posts videos without any comments, but they don't get called out on it.

I'm very guilty of posting an article or tweet without commenting on it (at least initially) but that's byproduct of my job. A lot of what I share is so people can read it and make up their own minds.

I do that too, because you and I have a tendency to vet the source before we post anything and be wary of confirmation bias. @The Ghost of Crazy Horse doesn't seem to understand that confirmation bias is not where you're supposed to start.

You don't seek it out. It's inherent in your worldview for whatever reasons (probably people whose opinions you respect and think "Yeah, I agree"). When you read something that resonates with those ingrained opinions, you're more apt to accept it than something that says "Hey, waitaminnit, that can't be right!"

    yet:

Ambassador Spock : He intrigues me, this Picard.

Lt. Commander Data : In what manner, sir?

Ambassador Spock : Remarkably analytical and dispassionate - for a Human. I understand why my father chose to mind meld with him. There's an almost Vulcan quality to the man.

Lt. Commander Data : Interesting. I had not considered that. And Captain Picard has been a role model in my quest to be more human.

Ambassador Spock : [looks at him] *More* human?

Lt. Commander Data : Yes, Ambassador.

Ambassador Spock : Fascinating. You have an efficient intellect, superior physical skills, no emotional impediments. There are Vulcans who aspire all their lives to achieve what you've been given by design.

Lt. Commander Data : Hm. - You are half Human?

    Ambassador Spock : Yes.

Lt. Commander Data : Yet you have chosen a Vulcan way of life?

    Ambassador Spock : I have.

Lt. Commander Data : In effect, you have abandoned what I have sought all my life.

Far from "exploring" his humanity, Spock has consistently sought to suppress it.

He's let it slip on several occasions, but never willingly.

I see that reading comprehension is not your strong point. Since you can't figure it out on your own, I'll spell it out for you:

"Linkboy" refers to the number of links you post, rather than forming your own opinions using critical thinking. And the fact that you seem to think that if you have a link, no matter if it's to some weird, off-the-wall conspiracy-theory site, that somehow gives credibility to what you post.

It has nothing to do with whether or not with the appropriateness of including a link when you quote an article.

But since you seem to have a problem with reading comprehension, I don't expect you to understand this post, either. My guess is that rather than trying to understand it, you will simply give it a "dumb" rating.

Please tell me you're being intentionally obtuse as some sort of exercise.

There is no way for a reasonable person with a firm command of both logic and the English language to get from what @Spaceturkey said to "posting just an article is fine, but as soon as you add a link to the article it becomes bad."

Strictly speaking, the presence of a link is not defense against a copyright infringement lawsuit. (Much like the people who post clips of TV shows to YouTube with a note saying "I do not own this material" are not actually protecting themselves in any way.)

Yes. That's one of the reasons I stopped copy/pasting most of the articles I share and just include the headline with a link.

That and also because I'm nothing else if not lazy.

When I was in the biz, I sent a couple of nastygrams to news aggregators that were ripping off our stuff wholesale, but never to a message board whose users happened to post a couple of things.

Although it may make a difference in how likely somebody is to file a complaint, as far as legality is concerned, whether anyone makes money off it is completely immaterial.

Link to the Past is my favorite one. And, though acquiring ROMs for emulators is on Nintendo's no-no list, the item randomizer hack (esp. in conjunction with Super Metroid) look phenominally fun from the speedrun vids I've seen
