Like someone pointed out in response to a Greg Kelly tweet today, the only rational way to read his remarks and position is that libertarianism, being the only true bullwark of communism, must prevail but it won't prevail without using the authoritarian tactics which they claim would not be part of the Libertarian Utopia. Basically to stop the bad guy you have to out-bad the bad guy.

Maybe I have too rosey a recollection but I don't think she could have honestly anticipated how Trumpism would play out. It's one thing to speak in broad boilerplate randian platitudes, it's another to want to overthrow the government in their service. Some of it is, frankly often unawares, just political roleplaying - like the dude who owns an AR-15 for protection but would melt like the wicked witch if ever confronted with an actual crisis point where they had to shoot someone.

Trouble is, it's near impossible to tell which is which until they cross the Rubicon.

I agree with this entire post, but I gotta nitpick the "dumb kids" part. I found this place 2 years after it opened--at 19, I was on the extreme left side of the age bell curve. Most posters I remember from that time were in their 30s and early 40s. As in, people who conceivably grew up in the post-integration period and knew on a surface level why saying the N word was a bad thing, of not the entirety of America's sordid past.

And it's not like we didn't have a mega ass ton of people like Mewa and Vandygoddess and Actormike and Chup among others pointing this out before many voted with their feet. The attrition rate among women and minorities on this board is glaring.

And certainly, there was never any excuse for the sexism.

They knew it was bad, but it was edgelordy to say it in white company. As the internet blossomed they did it online where they felt protected like they did in all white company. There was a big difference between the hip hop fans who were white and wrestling with people like eminem using "nigga," and things like Italians and rednecks using it in white only company. Clearly one side was sympathetic and ignorant to it's effects while the other side used it to be abusive and was not ignorant to the problems.

It was still quite obvious way back when. I am sorry to the people that were way too forgiving, but it should have never been acceptable, and I think it is why we see a lack of black participation in online message boards.

The only place I have seen a surprising number of black participants in message boards has been the anime community. I am always amazed how a style from a culture that does not express black pretty much at all has so many fans of color. One difference I noticed in message boards and on usenet was there was an inclusivity of black people and a general fight against white supremacist push into the fandom. Places like stormfront were pushing into the online anime community back then, but they faced fierce opposition to their racist ideas. Anime Message boards were very quick to permaban racists.

Before anyone says anything, I am not talking about the chans. There was a reason why the anime community had to go to the chans to get their anime. There was the american sterilization of legitimate releases based on the moral values of the church, and the lack of a big pipeline to handle the amount of material being released in the states and other areas where it was desired. There was a definitive love of another culture aside from white which undermined the racist ideals of the stormfront community and kept them out of the mainstream anime community. There was a large amount of filtering of the racist bullshit, and a large embrace of black fans.
