(No spoilers) The trailer gives you the main idea: an NPC in an online game achieves awareness of his situation and helps a human player seeking important evidence hidden within the world of the game. I really enjoyed this. It really isn't much more than the trailer promises (although there is a low-key subplot running through the film that pays off unexpectedly nicely). As this is a 20th Century Studios (no more "Fox") production and they're owned by the Mouse, there's a fun sequence where some, ah, familiar elements come into play. The VFX get pretty dazzling and the action sequences are pretty good. Ryan Reynolds is spot-on as the lovably naive titular character. Jodie Comer, playing both the real world character of Millie and her digital avatar molotovGirl, is terrific: I think she's headed for the Next Big Thing status. Joe Keery (Stranger Things' Steve Harrington) is also very likeable here; the script does more with his character than it first seemed it would. Taika Waititi goes a little over the top as the antagonist, but he's frequently funny. This is my favorite of the crop of summer movies so far. 1. Free Guy (7.5/10) 2. Black Widow (6.5/10) 3. The Suicide Squad (6.5/10) 4. Jungle Cruise (6/10)
